Two weeks ago, a group of Christian leaders sent a letter to Congress calling for an investigation into whether U.S. aid to Israel is contributing to human rights abuses of Palestinians. The letter was signed by the leaders of the various Christian denominations: Presbyterian Church, Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, the United Methodist Church, the National Council of Churches USA, and the United Church of Christ. On November 11th, Arab American Family Services (AAFS) will host a dinner entitled “Breaking Bread, Building Bridges” in association with AmeriCorps Vista. The dinner will highlight the history that the Arab American community and the U.S. Army have shared, and will announce the launch of a project in collaboration with AmeriCorps Vista that will bring together US veterans who served in the Middle East and at-risk immigrant and refugee youth in a tutoring program that is aimed at connecting both groups in a supportive academic setting. The program will aid immigrant and refugee children, particularly those from the Middle East, to view the US military more positively. Read More »

Stretched along a Ramallah street, building offices are bustling with the sound of a developing tech industry on the cusp of takeoff. The offices operate in an almost different dimension of reality, where companies emerge at the click of a button, and long-distance business relations are not subject to the suffocating language of borders, sovereignty, and occupation. Individuals in the office buildings seem to have escaped the drudgeries that typify Palestinian life, and work in a bubble detached from the everyday rigmarole of imposed military restrictions.

Tonight, President Barack Obama and Governor Mitt Romney will meet for the final debate of this election season to discuss foreign policy issues. Tonight’s debate, moderated by Bob Schieffer of CBS, will take place in Boca Raton, Florida and will air at 9:00pm Eastern Time. The debate could make a key difference in a neck-and-neck race, as the national polls show both candidates in a statistical tie. An Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operation in Detroit last week has produced a strong backlash after immigration officials detained two undocumented immigrants in front of their children’s schools. Washington DC | October 19, 2012 - As of October 13, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has received 2,614 applications for Temporary Protected Status (TPS) from Syrian nationals in the U.S. On March 29, 2012 Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano approved the status for Syrian Nationals already residing within the U.S. In the registration period that lasted from March 29, 2012 to September 25, 2012, USCIS has so far granted 273, only denying five applicants. The drums of war rarely affect those on the battlefield alone. As the number of civilian casualties rises in Syria, even those fortunate enough to escape the violence have not been spared. Refugee camps in Jordan and Lebanon are already overcrowded, absorbing around 200,000 people, and UNHCR has recently reported than an estimated 3,000 Syrians flee the country daily, broadening the implications of the conflict as the fallout spills over into neighboring states.
