“We’ve Got a Better Message”

By Jane Kaddouri
That’s what William Runco, Wayne County Republican Committee Chair, said about the Gingrich campaign in Michigan. “Romney has put together a great organization in Michigan… But we think we've got the better message.” Okay. Let’s check it out.  Read More »

Take Action - Tell the RNC to Dissociate from Gingrich’s Remarks

Last week, Republican Presidential Candidate Newt Gingrich said that the Palestinian people were “an invented people.” Once confronted with those remarks in Saturday’s Republican debate in Iowa, Gingrich did not backtrack, but actually took it a step further, describing the Palestinians as “terrorists”: Read More »

Statement of AAI Chairman George Salem on Newt Gingrich

The statement by Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich that Palestinians are an "invented people" is perhaps a new low in the campaign rhetoric of presidential hopefuls. A review of maps going back to the 16th century – and any serious review of history going back centuries earlier – reveals that Palestine and Palestinians were clearly there. They were a part of the Ottoman Empire, to be sure, but so too were the modern nations of Turkey, Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, and even Israel.  Read More »

Ahistorical and Dangerous: Gingrich On Palestine

By Jamila Benkato
Denying the existence of a people, and denying the existence of a people’s right to identify themselves as such, is a dangerous and familiar rhetorical tool.  Read More »

RJC 2012: Republican Candidate Statements

By Jamila Benkato
Today, the Republican Presidential candidates, with the exception of Ron Paul, are in Washington D.C. to speak to a private audience hosted by the Republican Jewish Coalition. At $500 a seat, the RJC 2012 Republican Presidential Candidates’ Forum is no casual affair – it is perhaps the most important chance for these candidates to pander to the far right. Read More »

RJC Overview: Rick Perry

By Jamila Benkato
At times nervously wringing his hands, Rick Perry gave the RJC audience a stilted and rote speech, to lukewarm response. “I want to be clear I support the goal of a Palestinian state,” Perry said before suggesting that “it should be the Palestinians who meet certain pre-conditions.”  Read More »

RJC Overview: Newt Gingrich

By Jamila Benkato
In a remarkable speech notable for its many, many historical and political references, Newt Gingrich told the RJC that he wanted to present a few “politically incorrect” but “factually accurate” statements. “I am very, very worried about our relationship with radical Islam,” Gingrich said, “because it is based on a pack of lies.” Read More »

RJC Overview: Michele Bachmann

By Jamila Benkato
Michele Bachmann wasted no time addressing the issue of the day during her prepared remarks at RJC 2012. Her prepared statement was the most extreme of the day, combining standard Republican talking points about Israel with almost unfiltered Israeli propaganda – including referring to Palestinians as “Palestinians” (in quotes). It was also completely devoid of any domestic policy at all. Read More »

RJC Overview: Mitt Romney

By Jamila Benkato
Today at RJC 2012, Mitt Romney received a standing ovation before even speaking – which he obligingly followed by a predictably positive speech about the US and Israel’s special relationship. Read More »

RJC Overview: Jon Huntsman

By Jamila Benkato
Huntsman’s performance at the RJC has received lukewarm reviews, and indeed he did not seem to get the warm audience reaction given to Romney, or even Santorum. As the most moderate candidate in the field, Huntsman declared that he would not pander. “I won’t contort myself into pretzels” to win votes, he said, adding that he would not be signing any pledges or attending Donald Trump’s debate. Read More »

RJC Overview: Rick Santorum

By Jamila Benkato
After a pedantic comparison of 9/11 to Pearl Harbor, complete with a “just accept it” take on the current wars in Iraq and Afghanistan (“the long war”), Rick Santorum started in on the topic of the day: US policy in the Middle East. In a veiled reference to the Arab Spring, Santorum argued that “in the entire region now, we see evidence of the President’s policies of ignoring the threat of radical Islam.” Obama was “naďve” to go to Cairo and “invite the quote Islamic world to the table.” Read More »

In Virginia, a Victory for Ramadan and a Rejection of Fear

Congratulations to David Ramadan, who won his bid for a seat in Virginia’s House of Delegates on Tuesday. To the credit of the Commonwealth, Tuesday was more than a victory for Ramadan. It was also a defeat for a campaign of misinformation and malicious rumor-mongering; an Islamophobic campaign of the very type that threatens the values, beliefs, and citizens of our country. Read More »

Huntsman Resists Arab Spring Crazy Talk

Several months ago, we praised Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels for remaining principled and not pandering to anti-Muslim sentiment. At the time, unapologetic Islamophobia seemed like an accepted element of the mainstream Republican platform. We called Governor Daniels the “adult in the room” for his leadership. Today, similar praise is due for a candidate who has taken a principled stance on another issue of importance to the Arab American community. Read More »
