As the demographics researcher at the Arab American Institute, I’m often asked about the total number of Arab Americans in the country. Though the question seems simple, the answer is anything but. Read More »

It’s disappointing when civil rights icons and progressive political leaders fail to live up to their own self-professed ideals of equality when it comes to Israel. They may be frightened of the political consequences of standing up to militant right-wing groups like AIPAC, but one can’t help but wonder if Biden and other leaders, decades in the future, will not once again regret their inaction when an oppressed people needed them the most. Nour’s case provides a clear example of the irrationality of the Israeli border policy, and the wide-ranging effects of occupation politics. The fear engendered at the Israeli borders and the boundless suspicion of all Palestinian people has created an untenable situation that adversely impacts Palestinians and Israelis alike. Read More »

These types of questions dominated the proceedings. In the course of the hearing, Israel was referenced 166 times, mostly on questions that have no bearing on the responsibilities of a Secretary of Defense. Meanwhile, questions about the many challenges that do fall within Hagel’s jurisdiction were practically ignored: 20 mentions of Afghanistan, and 2 passing references to the epidemic of troop suicides. The New York Times published an op-ed yesterday from Palestinian American law professor George Bisharat entitled, “Why Palestine Should Take Israel to Court in The Hague.” Bisharat argues that “The [International Criminal Court] could prosecute major international crimes committed on Palestinian soil anytime after the court’s founding on July 1, 2002.” Read More »

Last week, a group of Palestinians erected a “tent village” on Israeli-occupied land that had been seized for Jewish settlement construction. They named the city Bab Al Shams, after the powerful novel Gate of the Sun by Lebanese writer Elias Khoury. The book tells the story of the Palestinian struggle through the eyes of an aging freedom fighter, his relationship with his wife, and his forced exile from his home. Read More »

One of the silver linings of the incoming 113th Congress was that Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL), the controversial chair of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, had reached the term limit of her position and would be stepping down from the chairmanship. Unfortunately, The Hill revealed this week that Ros-Lehtinen has been appointed to serve as the chair of the committee’s Middle East and North Africa Subcommittee. Read More »

As was the case in 2009’s Operation Cast Lead, the new Israeli offensive into Gaza has been met with unequivocal support from senior US policymakers. Though President Obama, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, and UN Ambassador Susan Rice have all expressed “regret” for the loss of Palestinian lives, and called on Israel to “minimize civilian casualties,” all levels of government continue to support the Gaza offensive. On Wednesday, the Washington Post published a story about the Obama administration’s continued expansion of the drone war, the counterterrorism security apparatus, and the secretive “kill-list” of high-value assassination targets. The article is a shocking look at the extent to which the war on terror has profoundly eroded our civil liberties and inched us ever-closer to a state of perpetual war. Read More »

In almost all of these issues, including Israel/Palestine, Iraq & Afghanistan, and the approach to Libya and Syria, Romney’s stated goals are near-indistinguishable from Obama’s, many of which are continuations of Bush-era foreign policy priorities, with one central difference. Read More »
