Last Wednesday, AAI along with a number of community and interfaith organizations met with FBI Director Robert Mueller to discuss inflammatory, anti-Muslim training materials the Bureau used in trainings and presentations to FBI agents. In September of 2011, Wired Magazine reporter Spencer Ackerman made them public. The meeting with Director Mueller focused on steps taken by the Bureau to rectify the matter. Read More »

It’s official. Two Arab Americans will face off for Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords’s old congressional seat. Arizona State Senator Paula Aboud confirmed yesterday that she will run for office in Arizona’s newly redrawn District 2. Two weeks earlier, State Representative Matt Heinz announced that he would pursue the same office. The soon-to-be-formed District 2 will contain much of Giffords’s former district 8, which, due to her recent retirement, is now vacant. Neither Aboud nor Heinz (both Democrats) will run in the special election which is set for June 12. Both Candidates will leave former Giffords aide Ron Barber unchallenged for the Democratic ticket in the special election. It is unclear whether Barber will run for a full term, come November. Currently, Aboud and Heinz are the only two officially declared candidates running for Giffords’s seat in November. Read More »

The GOP has chosen Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels, a public official we’ve praised for his principled stances and success as a public administrator, to deliver the party’s response to the President’s State of The Union address next Tuesday. There are few better suited for the task than Governor Daniels, a governor with an impressive fiscal record the party will use to validate its message on the economy. Read More »

Three key endorsements by Arab American elected officials have bolstered the campaigns of three GOP candidates seeking the Republican nomination for President. Former New Hampshire Governor John H. Sununu, Freshman GOP Congressman Justin Amash (MI -3) and Congressman Richard Hanna (R-NY) have all thrown their weight behind the candidates they believe should win the republican nomination and the presidency. Two new Israeli settlements, Har Homa and Givat Hamatos, will completely alter the two thousand-year-old geography and biblical landscape which connects two of the holiest cities in Christendom: Jerusalem and Bethlehem. Israeli checkpoints at breaks in the wall surrounding Bethlehem on its northern border already constitute a near-impenetrable barrier for Palestinian travelers, but now, beyond ethnic lines, Christians in Bethlehem are scared that at the current rate of Israeli expansion their holy places may soon be completely off-limits to them. Several months ago, we praised Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels for remaining principled and not pandering to anti-Muslim sentiment. At the time, unapologetic Islamophobia seemed like an accepted element of the mainstream Republican platform. We called Governor Daniels the “adult in the room” for his leadership. Today, similar praise is due for a candidate who has taken a principled stance on another issue of importance to the Arab American community. Read More »

Somehow, GOP frontrunner Mitt Romney thinks President Obama is to blame for an “out of control” Arab Spring. Speaking in front of the State House in Concord, New Hampshire on Monday, Romney indicated that the White House should have been able to foresee the events of the Arab Spring before they happened. He went on to say: Read More »

This morning, AAI released a new poll on Arab attitudes towards Syria, comprised of data from six Arab nations and over four thousand respondents. AAI President Jim Zogby began the release by recalling a 2008 poll AAI had conducted in the Arab world for the BBC. The data from this 2008 poll reveals that Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad was among the most highly respected and widely supported leaders in the Arab World. Now, a mere three years later, new AAI polling data shows Bashar to be virtually isolated in the Arab world. Read More »

Yesterday, AAI President Jim Zogby joined Geneive Adbo and Ted Piccone in a panel discussion hosted by the National Security Network (NSN) and the Project on Middle East Democracy to address the current state of political affairs in the Arab world and Iran. Pro-democracy movements in several Arab countries are causing regional dynamics with Iran to shift. These changes are raising questions about the role the United Nations and United States will play in shaping regional politics and policy, and the profound implications for the United States in the region. NSN Executive Director Heather Hurlburt moderated the panel. Read More »

Turner’s Park 51-related sensationalist tactics are the basest form of disrespect. Bob Turner’s campaign diminishes our nation’s grief. It disregards our common determination to move forward. It disrespects the memory of those who fell on 9/11 by using their deaths as a political maneuver. And it shows the deepest contempt for the very freedoms and rights on which this country was founded. Read More »
