Responding to the Latest Israeli Provocation

In Washington, there was condemnation from the Obama administration, but there was no pressure. To aggravate the Obama administration some more, an Israeli official said that building in E1 as retaliation was not aimed at the Palestinians, but at President Obama for refusing to endorse the 2004 Sharon-Bush letter that approved of some settlement expansion in the West Bank. Former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert also described the Israeli move as a “slap in the face” of Obama. Read More »

Responding to the Voices of Disempowerment

Recently, there has been an increase in voices, allegedly Arab American ones, arguing that the Arab American community is irrelevant in national politics and should sit out the presidential election. The two main arguments being made are that (a) presidential elections don’t matter altogether and (b) that Arab Americans are too small & spread-out to make a difference. Read More »

Massive Beirut Bombing Follows Alarming UN Report on Lebanon

The tragic news of a massive bombing in Eastern Beirut today, killing at least 8 and injuring dozens more (reports are still pouring in at the time of writing this blog), raises further concerns about the possibility of larger scale violence taking place in the country. Let's hope Lebanon can bypass such a growing possibility. Read More »

Ryan/Biden Debate Shows Both Parties Indistinguishable on Syria

So both Romney and Obama have the same policy position: condemn Assad in the harshest terms, work with allies to support the right elements of the Syrian opposition, but no direct intervention unless there is a drastic development involving the use of chemical weapons or threatening vital American interests. Will that stop the campaigns from using the tragedy in Syria as a partisan foreign policy issue in the election? You bet it won’t. Read More »

The Incoherence of Netanyahu’s Message on Iran

While many political speeches can be contradicted by unmentioned facts, Netanyahu’s was one of those rare speeches that actively contradict themselves in the course of making their central argument. Read More »

Romney’s Self-Fulfilling Prophecy

But this is not just about Romney being out-of-step with his own country and party on this issue, it's also about him having gotten things backwards. This attitude of unthinkingly going along with Israel’s objections to Palestinian self-determination is not the outcome of this conflict being unsolvable; it is precisely what will keep this conflict from being solved. Read More »

Joe Scarborough Dead Wrong About “Why They Hate Us”

As for the anti-American sentiment that does exist in the Middle East, it has just as much to do with “their culture” and “our freedom” as anti-Arab and anti-Muslim views here in the U.S. have to do with “our religion” and “their falafel and hummus.” Just as hate here builds when the bigots exploit tragedies like 9/11 to foment the anti-Arab/Muslim sentiments, hate there builds when fanatics exploit a wide range of terrible American policies to promote anti-Americanism. Read More »

Islamophobe Accuses Unlikely Target of Bigotry

For those who are active in promoting Palestinian rights, the looseness with which the anti-Semitism charge is often made by anti-Palestinian activists is well-known. Even former President Jimmy Carter was branded a “bigot” by Alan Dershowitz for his distaste for Israeli policies towards the Palestinians. The conflation of criticism of Israel with anti-Semitism is not only absurd, but waters down a very serious charge that ought to be reserved for real racists. Read More »

U.N. Report Describes Tragic Human Rights Situation in Syria

The U.N. report concludes that “the best solution is a negotiated settlement involving an inclusive and meaningful dialogue among all parties, leading to a political transition that reflects the legitimate aspirations of all segments of Syrian society, including ethnic and religious minorities.” Much easier said than done, but that would indeed by the right track. Read More »

The Shifting Roles of Players in the Syrian Conflict

As the bloodshed continues in Syria, mystery surrounds the whereabouts of Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad, who has not been seen in public since the bombing that killed several key members of his inner circle. The only “personal” communication we’ve seen from Assad was a message he sent on Wednesday to his troops noting that “The fate of our people and our nation, past, present and future, depends on this battle.” Read More »

Does AIPAC’s National Council Include an “Arab Palestinian”?

Since surely no AIPAC National Council Member would ever be so foolish as to falsely impersonate an “Arab Palestinian” in an effort to afford undue credibility to her condescending lecturing of Arabs, Pinkus must really be an Arab Palestinian! Read More »
