There is a problem with the way federal law enforcement tracks hate crimes aimed at the Arab American community: they don’t. In the past ten years, there have been more than 800 incidents involving “violence, threats, vandalism, and arson against persons perceived to be Muslim or to be of Arab, Middle Eastern, or South Asian origin.” Federal charges have been brought in only a handful of cases, with only 45 convictions as of March 29, 2011. A Texas- based group, True the Vote, plans to mobilize millions of poll watchers around the country. But some fear that its real intention is to intimidate minority voters. Their fears were confirmed last month when True the Vote’s national election coordinator told poll watchers that their aim should be to make for voters feel “like [you’re] driving and seeing the police following you.” Read More »

Judge Robert Simpson has blocked enforcement of a key portion of Pennsylvania’s voter-ID law. Agreeing that the state is unlikely to issue the necessary number of IDs before the election, Simpson’s ruling means that the photo ID requirement won’t be in effect for the Nov. 6 election, but it may be in effect for future elections. The Arab American Institute (AAI) and the National Network for Arab American Communities (NNAAC) have adopted a logo for National Voter Registration Day on September 25. The Logo, designed by Nabil Ahmed Khatri, a high school student from Queens, New York with his own graphic design business, will be worn by thousands of Arab American volunteers across a number of states participating in efforts to register voters for the upcoming November elections. Opponents of Pennsylvania’s voter ID law were dealt a significant blow Tuesday, as Judge Robert Simpson refused to strike down the legislation. Although he expressed sympathy with those Pennsylvanians who would be burdened by the new voter ID requirements, Simpson ultimately decided that the state’s efforts to address the problems with implementing the law were sufficient to uphold it. On Tuesday, AAI co-sponsored a town hall meeting on Islamophobia in Philadelphia with the Center for Arab and Islamic Studies at Villanova University. AAI Executive Director Maya Berry, Matt Duss of the Center for American Progress (CAP), and Villanova Professor Marwan Kreidie moderated the discussion which was attended by over 100 community members and students. The panel addressed a multitude of questions about Islamophobia, the perceived threat of Sharia in the United Sates and the network behind what Center for American Progress has identified as Fear Inc. Matt Duss, co-author of CAP’s report, Fear Inc. The Roots of the Islamophobia Network in America, explained what the report found – a vast and incredibly potent contingent of scholars, validators and activists perpetuating anti-Muslim propaganda in political discourse and civil society.
