Texas Board of Education Brings Pro-Israel Agenda to Public Schools

Boards of education are not typically the scene of heated political races, but this year’s Texas State Board of Education (SBOE) election will be a notable exception. Because many textbooks used nationwide are printed in Texas, the decisions made by that state’s board resonate across the country and affect the education of millions of children.  Read More »

FIFA President has “Grave Concern” For Palestinian Hunger-Striking Soccer Player

With international attention rising on the state of Palestinian detainees in Israeli jails (thanks to their brave non-violent protests), there is no way around this one for Israel: either stop denying Palestinian detainees their basic rights or face growing international criticism and condemnation. Read More »

Arab American Support for Pascrell: It’s About Engagement, not Israel

Sometime between the beginning and end of their busy schedules today, residents of New Jersey's newly-drawn 9th congressional district will cast their ballots for one of two candidates in the Democratic primary. Arab Americans in the district, including residents of Clifton, Paterson and Passaic counties, will do their civic duty as well. Many of them, however, are unaware of an attempt to question the motives for their political participation in the primary. Arab Americans in NJ-9 are mobilizing for this election and are throwing overwhelming support behind Bill Pascrell, a candidate they’ve known and respected for years.  Read More »

Treatment of Arab Americans on Israel’s Borders Becomes More Invasive

The U.S. government has a serious responsibility here to tell Israel, a country that draws unprecedented (indeed, too much) military aid and diplomatic support from the U.S., that they must treat our citizens with respect. Read More »

Palestine Absent From McDonough Speech at U.S. Islamic Forum

When President Obama first came into office he promised this country that some fundamental and drastic changes would take place. He also promised the same scope of change in his Cairo speech to Arabs and Muslims across the globe, and because of the unprecedented gesture, people believed him. Today Arabs and Muslims, especially those in the Middle East, are still waiting for that fundamental change to come. Read More »

The Slippery Slope of Dehumanization

Something rather outrageous took place in Tel-Aviv last night. Israeli right wingers (with the participation of politicians from Likud and other rightwing parties) staged a rally to express their dissatisfaction with the growing number of African refugees and migrant workers in Israeli cities. Shortly after, the rally turned into mob violence, attacking African residents, destroying their property, and looting their possessions. Read More »

When the Messenger, Not the Message, Makes the Headline

It probably wouldn’t be news to anyone who reads this blog that American elected officials come under regular pressure from groups like AIPAC to take an unreasonably one-sided “pro-Israel” stance. But when the President of the moderate wing of the Israel lobby, Jeremy Ben-Ami of J Street, says that American politicians refrain from criticizing Israel because they’re “intimidated” by the more hardline “pro-Israel” groups, it makes headline news. Read More »

Egyptian Unrest Demonstrates Importance of Foreign Policy

In the early days of the Arab uprisings last year, many commentators were quick to assert that the mass movements in Tunisia, Egypt, Syria, and beyond had no foreign policy objectives; this great piece by Nicholas Noe of MidEastWire demonstrates that this is clearly not the case. Read More »

From the Guy that Brought you ‘Illegal Palestinian Settlements’

Texas Republican Congressman Louie Gohmert has yet again displayed his creative ability to completely flip an issue to reflect a viewpoint directly counter to conventional wisdom or reason. Yesterday, an article in The Washington Examiner gave us a glimpse of what Congressman Gohmert is likely to focus on when the House Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism, and Homeland Security – Gohmert is Vice Chair –hears testimony from FBI director Robert Mueller. As the article alluded, Gohmert will likely express concern that criticism in the wake of the months-long controversy involving the FBI’s use of bigoted anti-Muslim and anti-Arab training materials may be leading the FBI to overcompensate and appease critics , which Gohmert believes will compromise the FBI’s ability to effectively fight terrorism. Read More »

Last week, Secretary Clinton overruled Ros-Lehtinen’s hold on Palestinian aid and agreed to disburse the full $147 million package. Should We Say Apartheid?

A few months ago, I wrote a blog entitled “Can We Say Apartheid?” making the case for the accuracy of the term in describing Israel’s policy towards the Palestinians. But some of those who acknowledge the technical legitimacy of the apartheid analogy have disputed the utility of invoking it, thus giving rise to the follow-up question of whether or not we should be using the term. Read More »
