Even though Obama’s re-election is a small victory for advocates of civil liberties and global peace, these ideals are far from assured. What we won yesterday is little more than the possibility of future success, the hope that cool heads in the second Obama administration will be able and willing to see past the mistakes of the first. Well, folks, it’s been quite a ride, and we actually are saying goodbye (we were just trying to put it off for a few more seconds). But worry not, you’re in for one magnificent substitute weekly publication from AAI. And if that doesn’t quench your Countdown thirst, don’t panic, we’ll be back before you know it. Stretched along a Ramallah street, building offices are bustling with the sound of a developing tech industry on the cusp of takeoff. The offices operate in an almost different dimension of reality, where companies emerge at the click of a button, and long-distance business relations are not subject to the suffocating language of borders, sovereignty, and occupation. Individuals in the office buildings seem to have escaped the drudgeries that typify Palestinian life, and work in a bubble detached from the everyday rigmarole of imposed military restrictions.

The tragic news of a massive bombing in Eastern Beirut today, killing at least 8 and injuring dozens more (reports are still pouring in at the time of writing this blog), raises further concerns about the possibility of larger scale violence taking place in the country. Let's hope Lebanon can bypass such a growing possibility. Read More »

During a discussion following the film, activist Moriel Rothman was asked about the success of the Solidarity movement. He responded that even though the movement has not been able to return Palestinians to their homes, the outcome in Sheikh Jarrah has not been a failure. He calls it an “invisible success” because they have at least been able to temporarily stop the forced evictions. Wingert-Jabi and the whole production team inject a personal element into this aspect of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, but there is a still a long way to go. “We just want our country back,” said Mohammad, “We just want to live our lives.” Read More »
