On Monday, April 2, Israeli security forces once again raided the offices of Al-Quds University’s Institute of Modern Media, shutting down the office and arresting several key staff members. The crackdown – sanctioned by the Israeli Minister of Internal Security – was aimed at blocking the launch of an online multi-media community network called Hona Al-Quds. Read More »

Last week, the Arab American Institute (AAI), along with J Street and the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, hosted a Capitol Hill Briefing on the Arab Peace Initiative (API) 10 Years Later. Speakers included AAI President Jim Zogby, J Street President Jeremy Ben-Ami, New York Times columnist Tom Friedman, Carnegie’s Marwan Muasher, and Yitzhak Rabin’s son Yuval Rabin. Read More »

Today, the Baltimore Sun reported that WYPR-FM has dropped Managing News Editor Sunni Khalid after 9 years on the job. Khalid was placed on probation last month for posting the following on his personal Facebook page: "I, for one, have had enough of this pandering before the Israeli regime… The war-mongering toward Iran has, once again, distracted the world from Israel's brutal military occupation of the West Bank, East Jerusalem and the Golan Heights." In the four events, I spoke to over 400. We signed hundreds of letters of concern to local Congresssmen and Senators, developed strategies to pass an anti-war plank and a Palestinian rights plank at the Iowa State Democratic Convention, and mapped out a plan to lobby Congressmen to sign onto Congresswoman Barbara Lee's House Resolution promoting negotiations and not war as the way to resolve tensions with Iran. On the nuclear issue, Slavin described the sanctions imposed on Iran as “draconian,” saying they were strangling Iran’s economy, and accredited them to Netanyahu’s “hysteria” which led to unusually harsh sanctions to avoid war. On Netanyahu and Obama, Slavin read things differently from many pundits, saying that Netanyahu had effectively yielded to Obama’s red lines during his AIPAC speech... Read More »

A child’s life is forever changed after going through the experiences of occupation. The unjust arrests and harsh treatment within detention centers of Palestinian minors by Israeli soldiers needs to end, and people of conscience the world over should come together to demand it. Read More »

If you didn’t happen to catch last night’s Daily Show, it’s a great recap of the absurdity surrounding Washington’s decision to pull all its funding from UNESCO as a punishment for extending membership to Palestine. Read More »

It’s hard to believe that it has been 9 years since Rachel Corrie was killed in Gaza. 9 years since she bravely stood in the face of an Israeli bulldozer attempting to demolish the home of a Palestinian family in Rafah, and 9 years since the driver of that massive D9 Caterpillar bulldozer disregarded her humanity and literally drove over her. AAI has launched a web-based Arab opinion poll section featuring data from the past ten years on a range of issues. Among the polling data released today are numbers showing the Syrian regime is facing increased regional isolation and that Bashar al-Assad's favorable ratings are at an all time low.

These attacks will only further erode the Palestinian people’s already shaken belief in the viability of peace, brokered with a partner that continues to treat the Palestinian territories without any regard for sovereignty, or even human life. It also erodes the legitimacy of the United States as a critical party to future peace negotiations, for failing yet again to sympathize with the struggling and suffering of the Palestinian people even as a mere formality. With exception of Ron Paul, the GOP presidential candidates all spoke at the AIPAC policy conference yesterday. All of the three candidates delivered a similar message on Iran, taking the opportunity to hit out at president Obama's policies. Iran's nuclear program was the clear focus of the conference, overshadowing any other issue, including the peace process, by far. Despite similar messaging on Iran, the candidate speeches each have their own unique takeaways. I've outlined the ones I thought were the most important in this post. Read More »

President Obama is in a tough spot. On the one hand, he wants to bring about a peace agreement between Israelis and Palestinians (which requires pressuring Israel), as well as avoid a catastrophic war with Iran (which requires pushing back on AIPAC’s drum beat). On the other hand, he needs to make the Israel lobby happy with him in the lead up to the election. Read More »

It is indeed shameful that Dershowitz is going to be using his leverage to try to silence voices that he disagrees with, but the bigger travesty is that someone as manifestly dishonest as he is still holds sufficient credibility to be able to wage any campaign in the first place. Read More »

Had Adnan been an Israeli facing potential death while in Palestinian captivity, the international uproar would have been more significant and more widely covered by the mainstream media. It is now on us to make sure this garners the international attention it deserves, in the hopes that Adnan can see a healthy return to his family. It would be a stain on our collective conscience to allow Adnan to die quietly as yet another victim of the occupation. Read More »

To be clear, the issue here isn’t the fact that the U.S. has cast a veto or two in the past that weren’t morally defensible. It’s the fact that the U.S. has used its veto to shield Israel from international criticism for its crimes against the Palestinian people more times than the combined total of all vetoes cast by all the other permanent members of the UN Security Council on all issues. Take a moment to reread that last sentence. Read More »

Until the White House learns to consider Palestinians as equal partners in this process – and stop relying on the “expertise” of officials who refuse to recognize them as such – things will likely continue along as they have for the past thirty years. Read More »

Palestinian American Republican Abraham Hassan follows up on his question from the CNN Florida debate on January 26th. Mr. Hassan, a Republican from Jacksonville, FL asked the candidates how they would achieve peace between the Israelis and the Palestinians. Referring to a controversial statement made by Newt Gingrich weeks earlier where he said Palestinians were an "invented people," Mr. Hassan asserted before the debate audience: "As a Palestinian American Republican, I'm here to tell you we do exist."
