Ahead of yesterday’s election, conventional wisdom and historical precedent dictated that whoever won Loudoun County in Virginia, would almost certainly win the rest of the state. AAI President Jim Zogby joined CNN’s Wolf Blitzer and Kate Bolduan in the Situation Room last night to discuss a wide range of Middle East foreign policy issues as well as AAI’s recent poll on the Arab American vote in 2012. Dr. Zogby was joined by Danielle Pletka, vice president of foreign and defense policy studies at the American Enterprise Institute. While AAI’s poll shows that jobs and the economy rate as the two most important issues concerning Arab Americans this election cycle, foreign policy is also among the top issues. Read More »

AAI Board Member John Zogby’s polling and research firm JZ Analytics released the results of a new telephone poll today of likely voters’ support for President Obama and presumptive Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney. JZ Analytics puts Obama and Romney in “a dead heat,” with both candidates “receiving 46% of likely voters' support.” The poll is the first survey of public opinion conducted in the wake of Romney’s selection of Wisconsin Congressman Paul Ryan as his running mate and vice presidential pick. Earlier this week Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney was pointedly asked whether he would condemn Michele Bachmann’s witch-hunt against Arab American and American Muslim public servants. Romney refused, saying “I’m not going to tell other people what things to talk about. Those are not things that are part of my campaign.” This refusal to show leadership is troubling, but was dismissed by many as simply the former governor attempting to avoid controversy. Read More »

The President’s performance as of late, according to analysis by AAI Board Member and Pollster John Zogby, has been relatively dismal overall. However, despite the unimpressive performance, Zogby says the President is “pretty much where he needs to be” election-wise. Overall, at this point, Zogby has not made a prediction of who will win the race but says the contest is “pretty much the President’s to lose.” Romney, he says, “will have a very difficult time broadening the [Republican] base.” Read More »

Mitt Romney is proving, once again, to be the political shape-shifter he is often accused of being. Throughout the race for the nomination, which is likely to end today in Texas, Romney positioned himself as the most electable candidate, and the most “presidential.” He refrained from pandering to some of the popular issues other candidates pounced on, playing to the passions of their base constituents. In New Hampshire and Iowa, Romney struck down attempts by supporters to seek validation of their anti-Muslim, bigoted viewpoints. Read More »

With exception of Ron Paul, the GOP presidential candidates all spoke at the AIPAC policy conference yesterday. All of the three candidates delivered a similar message on Iran, taking the opportunity to hit out at president Obama's policies. Iran's nuclear program was the clear focus of the conference, overshadowing any other issue, including the peace process, by far. While the candidates performed in the expected order in Florida’s Republican Primary results, the wide gaps between them were a bit surprising. Romney won by a very comfortable margin, earning over 46% of the vote. Gingrich came in at second place with 31.9% of the vote. Santorum had a mere 13.4%, while Paul came in with a shabby 7%.
