I wanted to draw your attention to the work of the National Arab American Medical Association (NAAMA). Today NAAMA sent out a press release announcing their efforts to provide "urgently needed" medical supplies throughout the Arab World. The release cites the abysmal state of emergency medical care in Arab countries and highlights the organization's commitment to provide supplies where they are needed. NAAMA's future goal is to "have funds available not only for the ongoing tragedy in Libya but to have contingency plans for emergency medical relief wherever the need may suddenly arise in other parts of the Arab world." Over the weekend, the Center for American Progress (CAP) hosted an event entitled, “What do the Popular Uprisings in the Middle East Mean for the Future of Political Islam?” The keynote speaker for the event was renowned Oxford scholar of Islamic Studies Tariq Ramadan, who delivered his remarks before the discussion was turned over to a panel. Despite over a hundred protesters having been killed in Yemen, the country’s youth continue to fill the streets in the tens of thousands, calling for the ouster of President Saleh. President Saleh has been resistant to leaving office immediately, insisting on a face-saving transition out of power that would take place at a future election poll. Read More »

Given the situation in the Middle East, there is a growing need for Arab Americans to be in the media and weigh in on the issues that matter. During the height of the revolution in Egypt we put a number of individuals in contact with various media outlets to ensure Arab American voices were heard. It is extremely important to AAI and to the community that Arab Americans are represented in the media. Please continue to share your news with us and let us know what you are doing. Additionally, if you need any help in contacting the media, we have several tools available and would be happy to assist. Here are some appearances of Jim on a few programs we'd like to share with you. You can also share your news with us by...

Last night, President Barack Obama delivered a 20-something minute speech explaining US engagement in Libya. The general framework of his speech was to outline why his policy on Libya was the correct approach, responding to criticism from both directions, from those who thought we should be doing more and those who thought the US should not get involved at all. AAI President Jim Zogby appeared on Sky News "Live at Five" yesterday to discuss Arab perceptions of the current situation in Libya. He addressed the question of whether or not further Arab involvement in the assault against Moammar Gaddafi's forces in Libya is warranted. In recent days since the U.N. sanctioned offensive on Gaddafi troops advancing toward Benghazi, many questions have been raised about the extent of Arab support for military action in Libya. Jim gives his analysis of Arab opinion on the situation in Libya and Moammar Gaddafi. Read More »

President Barack Obama kicked off his speech by saying that Gaddafi had “lost the confidence” of his own people and the legitimacy to lead, noting that he has chosen large scale repression and violence against his people in an effort to stay in power. Obama presented Gaddafi with a “choice” to meet conditions (ceasing the advance towards Benghazi and ending attacks on civilians) that are “not negotiable” or face military strikes. Read More »

Libya: The debate about imposing a no-fly-zone over Libyan airspace has ended. Yesterday the United Nations Security Council adopted resolution 1973, which demands a ceasefire, and sanctions the use of French and British war planes to conduct operations to ensure a no-fly zone over Libyan air space.
Bahrain: The situation in Bahrain took a major turn after the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) committed forces, particularly from Saudi Arabia and the UAE, to the country to crack down on the protests that have engulfed the country for weeks. Read More »

When push came to shove in Egypt, and the country stood between complete destabilization and the removal of a President, people around Mubarak were sufficiently coherent to choose country over President. This doesn't appear to be the case with Libya's Muammar Gaddafi. There doesn't seem to be anyone able to bluntly place the full weight of reality over Gaddafi's completely delusional understanding of his relationship to his country and the need for him to step down.
