We’ve written a number of times about the lack of transparency around the administration’s drone policy and its constitutional implications. As the administration continues to face scrutiny for its use of drones abroad, state legislators are introducing legislation to combat the use of drone surveillance domestically. More than twenty state, including New Jersey , have considered creating laws that would limit or ban the use of unmanned aerial systems, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures. Lawmakers from the Senate and House met in a closed-conference and released the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) Conference Report Tuesday night, whereby conferees re-inserted language in the bill that allows for the indefinite detention of Americans without charge or trial. The NDAA is unconstitutional and un-American. Tell your Representative to say NO to indefinite detentions and vote NO on the NDAA! To close the Guantanamo prison was a hallmark of the President’s 2008 campaign. Urge the President to VETO the 2013 NDAA and tell him that he campaigned on the promise of a renewed commitment to the rule of law, and by signing the Defense bill, he will not be able to fulfill his commitment to closing the infamous detention center in Guantanamo once and for all. On its last day in session, the Michigan Legislature will not be voting on an “anti-Sharia” law. While it is troubling that we continue to deal with these initiatives (spearheaded by David Yerushalmi, co-founder of the American Freedom Law Center and “the man behind the anti-Sharia movement”), it is good news that the bill didn't make it to the floor. The bill in its current form not only discriminates on the application of the Due Process Clause afforded to immigrant communities but also makes it exceedingly difficult for the President to live up to his promise of once and for all closing the infamous Guantanamo Bay detention center. A few weeks ago, we wrote about two legislative efforts to impose independent oversight on the NYPD. The New York City Police Department is currently the only New York City agency without an independent Inspector General. At the City level, two City Council Members are introducing legislation today to change that. If the measure passes (34 out of 51 votes plus the support of the City Council Speaker are needed to push the bill through without opposition), the NYPD will have to answer to an independent Inspector General who would in turn make regular reports to the public. In the four events, I spoke to over 400. We signed hundreds of letters of concern to local Congresssmen and Senators, developed strategies to pass an anti-war plank and a Palestinian rights plank at the Iowa State Democratic Convention, and mapped out a plan to lobby Congressmen to sign onto Congresswoman Barbara Lee's House Resolution promoting negotiations and not war as the way to resolve tensions with Iran. So no longer is she only alleging that Iran said things they actually didn’t, but now we know “without a shadow of doubt” that the attack will happen, unless we do something about it. That’s the sort of lying that makes the Iraq war propaganda of Bush, Cheney, and Rumsfeld seem like honest straight-talk by comparison. Read More »

Since surely no AIPAC National Council Member would ever be so foolish as to falsely impersonate an “Arab Palestinian” in an effort to afford undue credibility to her condescending lecturing of Arabs, Pinkus must really be an Arab Palestinian! Read More »

Several weeks ago, we wrote about the problematic language in the Department of Homeland Security Reauthorization Act, which singles out “Islamist extremism” without considering other, more prevalent manifestations of extremism in American society. Today AAI issued a statement as follows Read More »

The U.S. and Israel are having a panicked reaction to this initiative. The Obama Administration has been clear in stating that should the Palestinians try to push their bid through to the UN Security Council, the U.S. will veto the proposal. Read More »

“Today we commemorate 18 years since the launch of a process that was supposed to lead us to freedom and independence. It was meant to last only for a transitional period of five years. Unfortunately, almost two decades later, the Israeli occupation of Palestine is entrenched and Israel’s occupation has turned into de facto annexation" Read More »

A couple of days ago, the House of Representatives passed H. Res. 268 with a vote of 407-6-13. As previously noted in an AAI action alert, H. Res. 268 is an anti-Palestinian bill that was introduced by Representative Eric Cantor (R-VA), blaming the failure of the peace process entirely on the Palestinians (ignoring Israel’s steps that have rendered productive negotiations impossible), prohibiting assistance to the Palestinian national unity government, and calling for vetoing Palestinian efforts for recognition by the UN. Notwithstanding its distortion of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, the bill had collected 356 cosponsors by the time it passed. Read More »

House Foreign Affairs Committee Chair Howard Berman (D-CA) brought to the floor and passed a resolution “condemning unilateral declarations of a Palestinian state." But what is really worth highlighting in this case was that a Congresswoman who reluctantly supported the resolution made arguments about its counterproductive nature. Read More »
