Lawmakers from the Senate and House met in a closed-conference and released the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) Conference Report Tuesday night, whereby conferees re-inserted language in the bill that allows for the indefinite detention of Americans without charge or trial. The NDAA is unconstitutional and un-American. Tell your Representative to say NO to indefinite detentions and vote NO on the NDAA! To close the Guantanamo prison was a hallmark of the President’s 2008 campaign. Urge the President to VETO the 2013 NDAA and tell him that he campaigned on the promise of a renewed commitment to the rule of law, and by signing the Defense bill, he will not be able to fulfill his commitment to closing the infamous detention center in Guantanamo once and for all. The New York City Police Department is currently the only New York City agency without an independent Inspector General. At the City level, two City Council Members are introducing legislation today to change that. If the measure passes (34 out of 51 votes plus the support of the City Council Speaker are needed to push the bill through without opposition), the NYPD will have to answer to an independent Inspector General who would in turn make regular reports to the public. Several weeks ago, we wrote about the problematic language in the Department of Homeland Security Reauthorization Act, which singles out “Islamist extremism” without considering other, more prevalent manifestations of extremism in American society. Today AAI issued a statement as follows Read More »

After last week’s stunning House vote rejecting the extension of key Patriot Act provisions, this week both the House and Senate passed those provisions. Those provisions include the “roving wiretap” provision, the “libraries provision,” and the “lone wolf” provision. Read More »
