Yesterday, AAI President Jim Zogby released the results of a 20-nation Zogby poll on Arab and Muslim opinions and attitudes toward Iran at the Woodrow Wilson Center for International Scholars. The poll release was accompanied by the launch of Zogby’s newest book, Looking at Iran: the Rise and Fall of Iran in Public Opinion Looking at Iran which compares 2012 Zogby Poll data on attitudes toward Iran with data Zogby Research has compiled from its past decade of polling in the region. Today, at the the Woodrow Wilson Center in Washington, DC, AAI President James Zogby releases key findings from a 20-nation poll conducted by Zogby Research Services (ZRS) on Arab and Muslim attitudes toward Iran. Zogby is joined by an impressive panel of experts to comment on the poll including, Jane Harman, Marc Lynch, Hisham Melhem, Barbara Slavin, and Haleh Esfandiari. AAI President Jim Zogby will deliver a presentation at the Woodrow Wilson Center next Tuesday on the results of a 20-nation poll of Arab and Muslim attitudes toward Iran. The Wilson Center has organized an impressive panel of experts to comment on the findings. The tragic news of a massive bombing in Eastern Beirut today, killing at least 8 and injuring dozens more (reports are still pouring in at the time of writing this blog), raises further concerns about the possibility of larger scale violence taking place in the country. AAI has launched a web-based Arab opinion poll section featuring data from the past ten years on a range of issues. Among the polling data released today are numbers showing the Syrian regime is facing increased regional isolation and that Bashar al-Assad's favorable ratings are at an all time low.

To be clear, the issue here isn’t the fact that the U.S. has cast a veto or two in the past that weren’t morally defensible. It’s the fact that the U.S. has used its veto to shield Israel from international criticism for its crimes against the Palestinian people more times than the combined total of all vetoes cast by all the other permanent members of the UN Security Council on all issues. This month, Arab Voices came out in paperback with a new section on the Arab Spring. Today, the Arab American Institute released two polls on Arab public opinion regarding the U.S. withdrawal from Iraq and Arab political concerns in a post-Arab Spring Middle East. Among the countries surveyed were Iraq, Egypt, Lebanon, Tunisia, Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Iran. On the U.S. withdrawl from Iraq, respondents were asked (among other things) to weigh in on the state of the country today, and consequences of the war for the future. Read More »

This morning, AAI released a new poll on Arab attitudes towards Syria, comprised of data from six Arab nations and over four thousand respondents. AAI President Jim Zogby began the release by recalling a 2008 poll AAI had conducted in the Arab world for the BBC. The data from this 2008 poll reveals that Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad was among the most highly respected and widely supported leaders in the Arab World. Now, a mere three years later, new AAI polling data shows Bashar to be virtually isolated in the Arab world. Read More »

I received an email the other day from a community member who is no stranger to Washington politics. Her email reinforced frustration over an issue that has been a topic of discussion here in Washington for the past three months or so: the importance of an Arab American meeting with the President to discuss the Middle East. I wanted to draw your attention to the work of the National Arab American Medical Association (NAAMA). Today NAAMA sent out a press release announcing their efforts to provide "urgently needed" medical supplies throughout the Arab World. The release cites the abysmal state of emergency medical care in Arab countries and highlights the organization's commitment to provide supplies where they are needed. NAAMA's future goal is to "have funds available not only for the ongoing tragedy in Libya but to have contingency plans for emergency medical relief wherever the need may suddenly arise in other parts of the Arab world."
