Today, AAI president Jim Zogby joined a panel of experts on Capitol Hill to discuss the image of Muslims in America. The event was sponsored by the Congressional Muslim Staffers Association (CMSA), introduced by the association’s president Assad Akhter, and moderated by Suheil Khan, Senior Fellow at the Institute for Global Engagement and a former Bush administration political appointee. In addition to the three panelists, approximately 75 people were in attendance. Read More »

In a political climate where it may be expedient to remain silent, 5 former Bush Administration staff members have spoken out against the charged rhetoric aimed at stopping the proposed Muslim Cultural Center in Lower Manhattan. As is important to do with examples of principled courage in times of division in our national political discourse, we would like to highlight their statements: Read More »

In the midst of countless politically opportunistic statements by elected officials yielding to misguided passions on the Islamic center in lower Manhattan, several officials have admirably resisted the pressures and stood firm on principle in defense of religious freedom and against the demonization of the Muslim community. The hysteria that has developed in response to the planned community center in lower Manhattan has reminded me of a piece I wrote back in 1994, that I wanted to share with you. It remains relevant today. Read More »

This war has been a calamity on too many levels. It has devastated and decimated the Iraqi people (leaving an untold number killed and one-fifth of the population either refugees or internally displaced due to a brutal ethnic cleansing campaign). Read More »

Recently, we highlighted the fact that leading Republicans have adopted the divisive politics of anti-Muslim forces in their opposition to the proposed Islamic center in lower Manhattan. Increasingly disheartened by the hostile rhetoric of some of their party leaders, prominent Arab American Republicans have joined American Muslim Republicans to promote a healthier Party discourse on the issue. As a heated debate about what should be a non-issue rages, we are reminded that more real leadership -- like that of Mayor Bloomberg -- is needed to end the Islamic community center controversy in New York. Read More »

Today, a two-state solution to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict is widely accepted. But in a Washington Times commentary, readers are expected to suspend reason and be afraid, very afraid of a potential Palestinian state. Read More »

Already very serious and deadly, today's incident could escalate into a broader conflict, a possibility that all concerned parties should do all they can to avert. Lebanese officials were quoted as favoring a diplomatic resolution to the crisis, and there are no reports of major Israeli troop movements, so this may be a hopeful sign that all parties have sought to observe UNIFIL's call for "maximum restraint." A few weeks ago, Israel's attack on a Turkish flotilla heading to Gaza marked a turning point in international opinion about the Gaza Blockade. Since then, the Obama Administration has called on Israel to take steps to ease the blockade. We believe that Israel's policy is impossible to defend, and instead of just easing the blockade, it should be ended. Read More »

Those behind SB 1070 are not going to wait around for the federal government to get their act together. Arizona State Representative Russell Pearce, a sponsor of SB 1070, has recently expressed interest in introducing legislation this fall that would deny birth certificates to children born in Arizona to parents who are not legally in the U.S. That's right; he is attempting to deny them the American citizenship accorded to them by the 14th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. Israel’s blockade of Gaza is counterproductive, immoral and illegal. Our government’s position on this flawed and tragic policy must change. We ask policymakers to consider the facts and work with our allies to end this policy. Doing so is in the best interest of the Palestinians, the Israelis, and our own national security interests. Nearly 1.5 million Palestinians are trapped in Gaza, with 4 out of 5 depending on humanitarian aid agencies for basic necessities. UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon described the suffering inflicted on the people of Gaza by the blockade as “unacceptable.” The blockade’s purpose was not merely to keep weapons out of Gaza, but was deliberately designed to target the civilian population of Gaza, with bans on things like potato chips, soda pops, pasta, and other things that clearly posed no security threat. The health situation in Gaza, already worrisome during the early period of the blockade, was severely exacerbated in the aftermath of Israel’s assault on Gaza in 2008/09 (known as Operation Cast Lead), in which much of Gaza’s infrastructure destroyed with the possibility of repair due to the blockade. Under the blockade policy, Palestinians are forbidden to leave Gaza except in special cases. Those who can’t leave Gaza include many patients who need to leave for necessary treatment. Movement inside Gaza is also restricted by a unilaterally imposed “buffer zone” along the inside of the walls and fences surrounding Gaza. The buffer zone as enforced goes much deeper into Gaza than publicly acknowledged, taking up “between a quarter and a third of Gaza’s agricultural land.” Read More »
