Just Vision’s My Neighbourhood: a Powerful Film

By Jennine Vari
During a discussion following the film, activist Moriel Rothman was asked about the success of the Solidarity movement. He responded that even though the movement has not been able to return Palestinians to their homes, the outcome in Sheikh Jarrah has not been a failure. He calls it an “invisible success” because they have at least been able to temporarily stop the forced evictions. Wingert-Jabi and the whole production team inject a personal element into this aspect of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, but there is a still a long way to go. “We just want our country back,” said Mohammad, “We just want to live our lives.” Read More »

Romney’s Self-Fulfilling Prophecy

But this is not just about Romney being out-of-step with his own country and party on this issue, it's also about him having gotten things backwards. This attitude of unthinkingly going along with Israel’s objections to Palestinian self-determination is not the outcome of this conflict being unsolvable; it is precisely what will keep this conflict from being solved. Read More »

NY Train Ad Raises Awareness About Palestine

You could have easily missed the news reports last week highlighting the contrived controversy surrounding a New York Metro billboard advertisement about the conditions of Palestinian refugees. The ad, paid for by Henry Clifford, Chairman of The Committee for a Just Peace in Israel and Palestine (CJPIP), received sharp criticism from some groups and individuals who allege that the ads are biased, anti-Israel, and anti-Semitic.  Read More »

Congressional Hearings On Palestine Miss the Point

By Nama Khalil and Jeffrey Wright
On July 10, the House Foreign Affairs Committee’s Subcommittee on the Middle East and South Asia held a hearing entitled “Chronic Kleptocracy: Corruption within the Palestinian Establishment.” As their title suggests, the hearings were meant to expose the corruption of Palestinian political institutions, particularly that of the Palestinian Authority (PA) and the Fatah Party that remains dominant within the PA. Read More »

Arab American Political Participation Under Attack

Earlier this month, we wrote about a democratic primary in North Jersey between Bill Pascrell and Steve Rothman, in which we noted a new standard for Arab American engagement in the political process. Jim Zogby said Pascrell’s victory was evidence of an Arab American political "coming of age," showing that the community could come out in support of a candidate, get out the vote and help get them elected. That is precisely what the community did in New Jersey's 9th district for Bill Pascrell, and it is exactly why efforts have been mounted to vilify Arab American voters in New Jersey and beyond.  Read More »
