Five Broken Cameras: Adjusting Perspectives to Open Wounds

By Jade Zoghbi
Throughout the movie, the illusion of protection for Burnat behind the lens vanishes as soldiers first threaten him with violence, then attack him. The two directors, however, realize that it is the truth which will free and empower the young and old, and perhaps prevent the continuing alienation between the two populations from a young age forward through the development of meaningful contact. Read More »

The Beautiful Tragedy of Bab Al Shams

Last week, a group of Palestinians erected a “tent village” on Israeli-occupied land that had been seized for Jewish settlement construction. They named the city Bab Al Shams, after the powerful novel Gate of the Sun by Lebanese writer Elias Khoury. The book tells the story of the Palestinian struggle through the eyes of an aging freedom fighter, his relationship with his wife, and his forced exile from his home. Read More »

Ros-Lehtinen to Chair MENA Subcommittee

One of the silver linings of the incoming 113th Congress was that Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL), the controversial chair of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, had reached the term limit of her position and would be stepping down from the chairmanship. Unfortunately, The Hill revealed this week that Ros-Lehtinen has been appointed to serve as the chair of the committee’s Middle East and North Africa Subcommittee. Read More »

Obama Nominates Hagel, Brennan

Today’s big news in Washington is the announcement of President Obama’s nominations for two key foreign policy posts: former Nebraska Sen. Chuck Hagel has been tapped to be the next Secretary of Defense and current Deputy National Security Advisor for Counterterrorism John Brennan will leave the White House to serve as director of the CIA. Both men must be confirmed by the Senate in hearings expected to begin later this month. Though both of these nominations are important in their own right, they also provide a window into the evolving foreign policy outlook of the Obama Administration. The results are decidedly mixed. Read More »

Congress Blames UN – Not Israeli Settlements – For Killing Oslo

It’s hard to escape the conclusion that Congress may need to rethink their understanding of the phrases “unilateral scheme” and “violation of the spirit of the Oslo Accords.” Read More »

Responding to the Latest Israeli Provocation

In Washington, there was condemnation from the Obama administration, but there was no pressure. To aggravate the Obama administration some more, an Israeli official said that building in E1 as retaliation was not aimed at the Palestinians, but at President Obama for refusing to endorse the 2004 Sharon-Bush letter that approved of some settlement expansion in the West Bank. Former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert also described the Israeli move as a “slap in the face” of Obama. Read More »

Amb. Michael Oren Claims U.S. Media Bias against Israel

Michael Oren knows something about Hamas that the rest of us don’t: apparently it has one of the most media-savvy public relations teams in the world. That’s what it would take to dupe the American media, which is a claim Oren made in the wake of Israel’s Gaza offensive.  Read More »

Public Opinion on Israel/Palestine: Indifferent or Up for Grabs?

The Israeli-Palestinian conflict has long been one of the most contentious issues in US foreign policy. At dining room tables, friends and family members that otherwise agree on most issues relating to politics are loathe to discuss the topic for fear of igniting a vitriolic exchange. But according to AAI’s most recent poll American Opinions on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, 2012, for an increasing number of Americans, Israel/ Palestine is not even an afterthought.  Read More »

Palestine at the UN: Who Stands to Gain

The United Nations General Assembly is currently deliberating the upgrade of Palestine’s status at the UN from “observer” to “non-member state.” Though the vote will not directly affect the situation on the ground – the occupation will still be present, violence will likely continue, and negotiations will remain stalled – it does have important ramifications for all players involved. Read More »

Leading American Jewish Voices Criticize Israel’s Gaza Campaign

Some right-wing Jewish organizations in the U.S. continue to pretend that, in defending all of Israel’s policies (no matter how misguided), they are somehow speaking for the entire American Jewish community. That narrative has been seriously undermined over the past decade, with the emergence of large Jewish groups in the United States and leading figures from within the Jewish community who oppose Israel’s occupation of Palestine and violations of Palestinian rights. And public reaction to this latest Israeli assault on Gaza may very well have conclusively shattered this myth. Read More »

The Real Victory Still Lies Ahead

Even though Obama’s re-election is a small victory for advocates of civil liberties and global peace, these ideals are far from assured. What we won yesterday is little more than the possibility of future success, the hope that cool heads in the second Obama administration will be able and willing to see past the mistakes of the first. Read More »

Massive Beirut Bombing Follows Alarming UN Report on Lebanon

The tragic news of a massive bombing in Eastern Beirut today, killing at least 8 and injuring dozens more (reports are still pouring in at the time of writing this blog), raises further concerns about the possibility of larger scale violence taking place in the country. Let's hope Lebanon can bypass such a growing possibility. Read More »
