Can We Say Apartheid?

Those who are truly outraged with the “apartheid” characterization of Israel should spend less time condemning their opponents and more time combating Israel’s discriminatory policies so they can erase the ugly reality that will guarantee enduring conflict. Read More »

Displacement Looms Over Bethlehem’s Christians

Two new Israeli settlements, Har Homa and Givat Hamatos, will completely alter the two thousand-year-old geography and biblical landscape which connects two of the holiest cities in Christendom: Jerusalem and Bethlehem. Israeli checkpoints at breaks in the wall surrounding Bethlehem on its northern border already constitute a near-impenetrable barrier for Palestinian travelers, but now, beyond ethnic lines, Christians in Bethlehem are scared that at the current rate of Israeli expansion their holy places may soon be completely off-limits to them.  Read More »

Statement of AAI Chairman George Salem on Newt Gingrich

The statement by Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich that Palestinians are an "invented people" is perhaps a new low in the campaign rhetoric of presidential hopefuls. A review of maps going back to the 16th century – and any serious review of history going back centuries earlier – reveals that Palestine and Palestinians were clearly there. They were a part of the Ottoman Empire, to be sure, but so too were the modern nations of Turkey, Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, and even Israel.  Read More »

Democratic Party Splits on Israel

In today's POLITICO, Ben Smith reports on a rift in the Democratic party with respect to Israel. He writes, "The Center for American Progress, the party’s key hub of ideas and strategy, and Media Matters, a central messaging organization, have emerged as vocal critics of their party’s staunchly pro-Israel congressional leadership and have been at odds, at times, with Barack Obama’s White House.” AAI president Jim Zogby weighs in on the subject and addresses the issue of whether or not this critical contingent will have any impact on President Obama’s standing among Jewish supporters, evangelicals and others heading into 2012.  Read More »

Take Action: Keep Your Representatives Off UNESCO Letter

Last week, you sent over 1,500 letters to your representatives urging them to repeal the law that forces Congress to defund UNESCO simply for admitting Palestine as a member. Apparently, Rep. Jeff Flake (R-AZ) didn’t get the message.  Read More »

Does AIPAC’s National Council Include an “Arab Palestinian”?

Since surely no AIPAC National Council Member would ever be so foolish as to falsely impersonate an “Arab Palestinian” in an effort to afford undue credibility to her condescending lecturing of Arabs, Pinkus must really be an Arab Palestinian! Read More »

TAKE ACTION: First UNESCO, Now the World Health Organization?

Will we seriously withdraw from–and cripple–every single international body just to send a misguided message of support to Israel’s hardline government? Read More »

UNESCO Withdrawal Hurts U.S. Economy

By withdrawing from UNESCO simply because Palestine was admitted as a member, Congress has seriously jeopardized American economic interests when we can hardly afford to lose more jobs. At a time of record deficits and economic stagnation, how can Congress willingly hurt American businesses, to simply take an ineffective and counterproductive stand with Israel? Read More »

Congress Sacrifices American Interests…Again

We’ve written countless times in the past about Washington’s blind support for Israel, but this might really take the cake. Despite fully recognizing the widespread damage that withdrawal from UNESCO will cause, Congress appears to consider it a bygone conclusion that we must support a hardline pro-Israeli position at all costs, no matter the consequences.  Read More »

From the Perspective of An Israeli Settler

By Maha Neouchy
Israeli settlements in Palestine have been the root of controversy for decades. But no matter what your views are on the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, it is important to hear from anyone and everyone who has been affected by this bloody conflict, one that still has no clear end in sight. Read More »

When Does “Anti-Israel” Become “Anti-Semitic”?

Last October, Secretary of Education Arne Duncan amended Title VI of the 1964 Civil Rights Act to include “harassment of members of religious groups based on shared ethnic characteristics,” extending Title VI protections to the Jewish community, among others. Though the decision was widely applauded at the time, it has since raised significant concerns about the abuse of Title VI provisions against pro-Palestinian activity, under the guise of it being “anti-Semitic.” Read More »

Watch Live: Iowa and “The Challenges We Face”

I love Iowa. Folks take politics so seriously. A great group last night at Iowa City's "Old Brick". My talk was called "The Challenges We Face". It was co-sponsored by the United Nations Association and the Arab Students at the University of Iowa. Attached is the front page headline story in The Daily Iowan "Zogby: GOP hopefuls worrisome". A good story that interviewed many in the audience.  Read More »

Congress halts aid to the Palestinians despite opposition by Administration

Congress officially announced on Monday that security aid to the Palestinian Authority as well as much needed humanitarian aid has been blocked in response to the Palestinian leadership’s attempt to gain UN recognition. “These are mainly humanitarian and development projects – it is another kind of collective punishment which is going to harm the needs of the public without any positive contribution,” PA spokesman Ghassan Khatib said.  Read More »

Beginning the Policy Debate from Iowa and New Hampshire

As the 2012 election draws nearer, AAI President Jim Zogby once again heads to Iowa and New Hampshire to meet with voters, activists, and newspaper editorial boards. Four years ago Jim made a similar trip, where he was met with thoughtful questions and engaged crowds, particularly on issues related to the Middle East. Voters in Iowa and New Hampshire in 2007 seemed eager to learn more about the challenges faced by the U.S. in the region, but also cognizant of the need for a new foreign policy direction. Read More »

Congress Sets Back Peace Process

In a final attempt to forgo a confrontation at the U.N., the Obama Administration held a closed meeting yesterday with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas. Washington hoped to avoid a showdown at the U.N. by pressuring Abbas to submit a request for recognition for statehood without forcing a vote at the Security Council, in order to re-launch peace talks. Read More »

The Arab Spring and Iran: A New Regional Dynamic

Yesterday, AAI President Jim Zogby joined Geneive Adbo and Ted Piccone in a panel discussion hosted by the National Security Network (NSN) and the Project on Middle East Democracy to address the current state of political affairs in the Arab world and Iran. Pro-democracy movements in several Arab countries are causing regional dynamics with Iran to shift. These changes are raising questions about the role the United Nations and United States will play in shaping regional politics and policy, and the profound implications for the United States in the region. NSN Executive Director Heather Hurlburt moderated the panel. Read More »

18 Years Since Oslo

“Today we commemorate 18 years since the launch of a process that was supposed to lead us to freedom and independence. It was meant to last only for a transitional period of five years. Unfortunately, almost two decades later, the Israeli occupation of Palestine is entrenched and Israel’s occupation has turned into de facto annexation" Read More »
