This Weekend from Washington: Inauguration, Service Day, and Immigration

This weekend in Washington is jammed-packed with events, and the Arab American community is participating in all of it. From volunteering during a national day of service, to attending the Inaugural Ball and official swearing-in ceremony Monday, Arab Americans are right at the center of all the action. Following inauguration weekend, AAI will get straight back to work, attending a White House meeting to discuss our community and support for national immigration reform. ICE Operation Angers Detroit Community

An Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operation in Detroit last week has produced a strong backlash after immigration officials detained two undocumented immigrants in front of their children’s schools. Good News and Bad News on Immigration

This week, some civil rights activists have organized rallies and protests around the state, while others are manning hotlines to advise people of their rights if they’re questioned. A Department of Justice hotline, established in June 2012, continues to operate in the state. Civil liberties advocates like Leticia Ramirez are suggesting that legal immigrants provide only their name and date of birth — but no documents showing their place of birth — in protest of the law. Read More »
