We’ve written a number of times about the lack of transparency around the administration’s drone policy and its constitutional implications. As the administration continues to face scrutiny for its use of drones abroad, state legislators are introducing legislation to combat the use of drone surveillance domestically. More than twenty state, including New Jersey , have considered creating laws that would limit or ban the use of unmanned aerial systems, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures. Today, the Supreme Court hears arguments on one of the most important legislative initiatives from the Civil Rights era: the Voting Rights Act of 1965. The VRA ensures that all eligible American citizens are able to vote, unimpeded by processes or regulations— from literacy tests and English-only ballots, to moving polling places and redistricting— that could effectively disenfranchise ethnic minorities. There is a problem with the way federal law enforcement tracks hate crimes aimed at the Arab American community: they don’t. In the past ten years, there have been more than 800 incidents involving “violence, threats, vandalism, and arson against persons perceived to be Muslim or to be of Arab, Middle Eastern, or South Asian origin.” Federal charges have been brought in only a handful of cases, with only 45 convictions as of March 29, 2011. There are only three days left before the election on Tuesday, but there are still ample opportunities to have an impact. Make no mistake, every vote counts. And because this election is so close, Arab Americans can and will make a difference in it. But remember, the Presidential election is not the only contest this year. There are plenty of other races you can also have an impact on. Read More »

A Texas- based group, True the Vote, plans to mobilize millions of poll watchers around the country. But some fear that its real intention is to intimidate minority voters. Their fears were confirmed last month when True the Vote’s national election coordinator told poll watchers that their aim should be to make for voters feel “like [you’re] driving and seeing the police following you.” Read More »

Today, not only are Arab Americans voting in record numbers, they are helping to influence the outcome of races like never before. Read More »

Governor Rick Scott's controversial voter purge was revitalized last week, when the Department of Homeland Security granted Florida access to its Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements (SAVE) database. The SAVE database will give election officials the identification numbers of non-citizens living legally in the United States, providing Gov. Scott's administration with another method of adding names to the list of those considered ineligible to vote. Read More »

Earlier this week, Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL), the Chair of the powerful House Foreign Affairs Committee, introduced H.R. 6067, titled the Western Hemisphere Security Cooperation Act of 2012. The bill provides for an American response to a favorite bugaboo of conservative foreign policy types: the supposedly growing threat of Hezbollah’s operations in Latin America. The only problem is that the threat is overblown. Hezbollah’s activities in Latin America are limited to fundraising, not operations, and the idea that these activities threaten American interests is absurd on its face. Read More »

According to AAI polling data, Arab Americans have become less and less able to relate to the Republican Party over the last ten years. In 2000 Arab American Republicans constituted 38% of the Arab vote. That number dwindled to 25% in 2010. The issue remains that alienating any group of potential voters is not smart for either political party. Read More »

While the candidates performed in the expected order in Florida’s Republican Primary results, the wide gaps between them were a bit surprising. Romney won by a very comfortable margin, earning over 46% of the vote. Gingrich came in at second place with 31.9% of the vote. Santorum had a mere 13.4%, while Paul came in with a shabby 7%. Palestinian American Republican Abraham Hassan follows up on his question from the CNN Florida debate on January 26th. Mr. Hassan, a Republican from Jacksonville, FL asked the candidates how they would achieve peace between the Israelis and the Palestinians. Referring to a controversial statement made by Newt Gingrich weeks earlier where he said Palestinians were an "invented people," Mr. Hassan asserted before the debate audience: "As a Palestinian American Republican, I'm here to tell you we do exist." A few days ago, a right-wing group in Florida protested the TLC series “All American Muslim” on the grounds that “the show profiles only Muslims that appear to be ordinary folks” and not violent jihadists, demanding that advertisers pull their ads from the show. The result? Advertisers, including the national hardware chain Lowe’s, pulled their advertisements. Read More »
