“The main way we’re gonna goof this up as Republicans is to nominate the wrong candidate.” That’s what GOP presidential candidate Tim Pawlenty recently conveyed to a group of potential Iowa caucus-goers as he has struggled to gain political momentum before the crucial Iowa straw poll on August 13th. His comments are more than likely aimed at fellow Minnesotan and presidential candidate Michele Bachmann who has emerged as an unexpected challenger to Pawlenty in Iowa. Bachman’s frontrunner status in the state has asserted pressure on Pawlenty and has forced the often unaggressive, soft-spoken candidate to finally start throwing some punches of his own–this time at Bachmann. Last night’s GOP debate on CNN gave us a disturbing glimpse of how Islam and Muslims will be talked about in the lead up to the upcoming election. When asked about his bigoted position on American Muslims serving in his cabinet, Herman Cain stood his ground. Not to be outdone, former Speaker Newt Gingrich chimed in, warning of Muslims who harbor secret hostility to America, and suggesting that we use McCarthy-era tactics to root them out. Indeed, combatting the spread of Sharia law was one of the applause lines of the evening. Please take a few moments to demand an end to this hateful discourse. Read More »

In an article that examines the impact of President Obama's Mideast policy on Arab American voters, Salon's Justin Elliott takes on an often overlooked concern. Elliott states, "While the media focus has been on Jewish Americans, this community is less than pleased with Obama's Mideast policy." Read More »

In response to a question about whether he would be comfortable appointing Muslims to his cabinet or as federal judges were he elected President, Herman Cain said the following:
You think that’s shocking coming from a presidential contender? Wait until you hear who took issue with his comments! Glenn Beck (yes, seriously, Glenn Beck) noted that even he would trust his Muslim friends with such positions, and asked Cain via telephone on his show to explain his perplexing statement. The GOP presidential field is filling in nicely. Seven contenders have either officially announced their candidacy or have established exploratory committees. Declared candidates include Herman Cain (CEO of Godfather’s Pizza), Newt Gingrich, Ron Paul, and Tim Pawlenty. In June, Michele Bachmann, Mitt Romey, and Rick Santorum are expected to announce their candidacies (in Iowa, New Hampshire, and Pennsylvania, respectively). John Huntsman, Roy Moore, and Buddy Roemer have launched exploratory committees, and Huntsman is expected to announce his decision soon. Texas Governor Rick Perry has said that he will consider seeking the Presidential nomination, and NY Congressman Peter King, best known for convening the February hearings on homegrown radicalization of Islam, has said that he’ll run if there’s broad enough GOP support for his candidacy — and has recently been sending constituents e-mails with links to press speculation about his intention to run in 2012. Today Mississippi Governor, Haley Barbour announced that he will not seek the GOP presidential nomination. Gov. Barbour's announcement came as a surprise to most as in late January he said that he was "seriously thinking" about a presidential run. He shortly thereafter began traveling and also hired new staff. As he said he would, however, Barbour waited until the end of April to make his ultimate decision, and now as a result heads are turning towards Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels. Read More »

We've been writing about Mitch Daniels quite often, and we've watched him in the news closely these past few months. Governor Daniels (R-Indiana) has been relatively quiet about a potential presidential run, but has remained a subject of extreme interest for many reasons. Gov. Daniels peeks our interest not only because he is Arab American (his grandparents are from Syria), he is a politician who - even in today's hyper-partisan political climate - has not digressed from his primary focus; fixing the economy. With no leading Republican yet officially declared for president and only two exploration committees formed, the 2012 field remains wide open. However, as one surveys the list of potential candidates, one sticks out for a very simple reason. Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels, in contrast to most if not all of his compatriots, has kept his rhetoric on an even keel. He hasn’t pandered to or sought out the political benefits of engaging in the hyper-partisan arena of campaign politics. Read More »
