Two Arab American candidates could potentially run against each other for Gabrielle Giffords’s old congressional seat. Arizona State Representative Matt Heinz yesterday announced his candidacy for Arizona’s 8th congressional district, a seat which could potentially have six different candidates (three Republicans and three Democrats) running to occupy it. The GOP has chosen Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels, a public official we’ve praised for his principled stances and success as a public administrator, to deliver the party’s response to the President’s State of The Union address next Tuesday. There are few better suited for the task than Governor Daniels, a governor with an impressive fiscal record the party will use to validate its message on the economy. Read More »

Three key endorsements by Arab American elected officials have bolstered the campaigns of three GOP candidates seeking the Republican nomination for President. Former New Hampshire Governor John H. Sununu, Freshman GOP Congressman Justin Amash (MI -3) and Congressman Richard Hanna (R-NY) have all thrown their weight behind the candidates they believe should win the republican nomination and the presidency. Americans for Peace Now has a great list of the “Top 10 Wackiest Congressional Actions on the Middle East of 2011,” in a year where they had a pretty wide pool to choose from. We’ve covered a lot of these stories before, but this list does a great job of highlighting just how out of sync Congress can sometimes be when it comes to Middle East issues. Read More »

Just weeks away from the Iowa Presidential Caucus, Republican Presidential candidates met in Sioux City, Iowa to discuss everything from to economy to Ronald Reagan. Below are key quotes from the evening concerning Iran, Israel, Iraq, immigration and foreign policy in general.

The statement by Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich that Palestinians are an "invented people" is perhaps a new low in the campaign rhetoric of presidential hopefuls.
A review of maps going back to the 16th century – and any serious review of history going back centuries earlier – reveals that Palestine and Palestinians were clearly there. They were a part of the Ottoman Empire, to be sure, but so too were the modern nations of Turkey, Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, and even Israel. Read More »

In today's POLITICO, Ben Smith reports on a rift in the Democratic party with respect to Israel. He writes, "The Center for American Progress, the party’s key hub of ideas and strategy, and Media Matters, a central messaging organization, have emerged as vocal critics of their party’s staunchly pro-Israel congressional leadership and have been at odds, at times, with Barack Obama’s White House.”
AAI president Jim Zogby weighs in on the subject and addresses the issue of whether or not this critical contingent will have any impact on President Obama’s standing among Jewish supporters, evangelicals and others heading into 2012.

I am not attempting to exaggerate the sentiment, I genuinely cannot think of a bigger indictment of American political culture than that a disastrous clown of Cain’s proportions can continue to be taken seriously as a presidential contender. Read More »

Congratulations to David Ramadan, who won his bid for a seat in Virginia’s House of Delegates on Tuesday. To the credit of the Commonwealth, Tuesday was more than a victory for Ramadan. It was also a defeat for a campaign of misinformation and malicious rumor-mongering; an Islamophobic campaign of the very type that threatens the values, beliefs, and citizens of our country. Several months ago, we praised Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels for remaining principled and not pandering to anti-Muslim sentiment. At the time, unapologetic Islamophobia seemed like an accepted element of the mainstream Republican platform. We called Governor Daniels the “adult in the room” for his leadership. Today, similar praise is due for a candidate who has taken a principled stance on another issue of importance to the Arab American community. Read More »

Somehow, GOP frontrunner Mitt Romney thinks President Obama is to blame for an “out of control” Arab Spring. Speaking in front of the State House in Concord, New Hampshire on Monday, Romney indicated that the White House should have been able to foresee the events of the Arab Spring before they happened. He went on to say: Read More »

This evening The Washington Post and Bloomberg will host a debate for the Republican presidential candidates at Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire. While the debate season got off to a slow start, recent debates have caused definite shifts in the momentum of various campaigns. The focus of tonight’s debate will be on the economy. Given the importance of this issue to voters, this particular debate has the definite potential to make or break the chances of Presidential hopefuls and launch a new phase of the Republican primary race. Here are some stories to watch for in tonight’s debate: Read More »

Tonight I had the honor to deliver an address to the World Affairs Council of New Hampshire. It was the inauguration of a four part series entitled "Primary Concerns: Critical Foreign Policy Issues at the 2012 Ballot Box" - an effort to prepare the state's voters on the issues the candidates should be raising (but probably won't) when they come through campaigning for the 2012 primary election. Pleased that the Arab World came first! Read More »

As the 2012 election draws nearer, AAI President Jim Zogby once again heads to Iowa and New Hampshire to meet with voters, activists, and newspaper editorial boards. Four years ago Jim made a similar trip, where he was met with thoughtful questions and engaged crowds, particularly on issues related to the Middle East. Voters in Iowa and New Hampshire in 2007 seemed eager to learn more about the challenges faced by the U.S. in the region, but also cognizant of the need for a new foreign policy direction. Turner’s Park 51-related sensationalist tactics are the basest form of disrespect. Bob Turner’s campaign diminishes our nation’s grief. It disregards our common determination to move forward. It disrespects the memory of those who fell on 9/11 by using their deaths as a political maneuver. And it shows the deepest contempt for the very freedoms and rights on which this country was founded. Read More »

GOP presidential candidates have all weighed in on the debt issue, declaring almost unanimously that President Obama is solely to blame for allowing the national debt spin out of control, leading to the downgrade of our Standard & Poor’s credit rating from AAA to AA+. But is this a viable assessment or just more political rhetoric? Read More »
