Starting the Revolution on Women’s Rights

Last week, Mona Eltahawy’s article for Foreign Policy, Why Do They Hate Us?, received both strong praise and harsh criticism for its take on misogyny and gender inequality in the Arab world. Eltahawy correctly identified several problems impacting many Arab women, including sexual harassment, limited civil rights, and female genital mutilation, but the framing and objectives of the piece were called into question by a multitude of critics (the best of which include Tom Dale, Mona Kareem, and Leila Ahmed). Read More »

Egypt’s Birther Crisis

There is the controversy surrounding Salafi candidate and front-runner Hazem Salah Abu Ismail, whose antagonism towards the United States is undermined by the fact that his mother is an American citizen (a technical disqualifier in Egyptian elections). In effect, Egypt is having its own variation of a “birther” controversy. Read More »

AIPAC: Three Candidates, Three Takeaways

With exception of Ron Paul, the GOP presidential candidates all spoke at the AIPAC policy conference yesterday. All of the three candidates delivered a similar message on Iran, taking the opportunity to hit out at president Obama's policies. Iran's nuclear program was the clear focus of the conference, overshadowing any other issue, including the peace process, by far. Despite similar messaging on Iran, the candidate speeches each have their own unique takeaways. I've outlined the ones I thought were the most important in this post.  Read More »

AAI Statement on Americans Prohibited from Leaving Egypt

The Arab American Institute is outraged by the targeting of Americans by the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF), Egypt's military government. The December 29 raid and confiscation of materials from the offices of the International Republican Institute (IRI) and National Democratic Institute (NDI), among others, by SCAF was a provocative step taken against non-governmental organizations engaged in important civil society work. The news that six Americans have now been prohibited from leaving Egypt is unacceptable.  Read More »

Violence Mars “Arab Spring”

This morning, we heard the tragic news of twin suicide bombings in Damascus that killed at least 40 people and injured over a hundred, amid ever more valid fears that Syria is probably sliding towards civil war. Meanwhile in Egypt, footage emergedof the brutal beating and shooting of protesters, and one woman suffered a very serious head injury from repeated clubbing by the army’s anti-riot force. In Iraq, a dozen coordinated bombings killed at least 60 people and injured over 200. Could anyone have imagined this climate was less than a year away from the euphoria following Mubarak’s ouster? Read More »

Huntsman Resists Arab Spring Crazy Talk

Several months ago, we praised Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels for remaining principled and not pandering to anti-Muslim sentiment. At the time, unapologetic Islamophobia seemed like an accepted element of the mainstream Republican platform. We called Governor Daniels the “adult in the room” for his leadership. Today, similar praise is due for a candidate who has taken a principled stance on another issue of importance to the Arab American community. Read More »
