President Obama issues Ramadan Kareem greeting: "Ramadan is a celebration of a faith known for great diversity and racial equality. And here in the United States, Ramadan is a reminder that Islam has always been part of America and that American Muslims have made extraordinary contributions to our country." Read More »

Yesterday Colorado, Connecticut and Minnesota held their primary elections and of the four Arab American candidates running for office, two are moving on the general election in November. Congratulations to Arab American State Representatives Joe Rice (D-CO 38th District) and Selim Noujaim (R-CT 74th District)!
There were several competitive races in these states and a few unexpected results from these midterm elections. Read More »

The epithet “dedication to public service” is often overused by politicians to the point of cliché. Yet a recent conversation with District 38 Colorado State Representative Joe Rice (D) presented a rare and inspiring image of a public servant dedicated to his country and constituents. At the age of 17, Rice signed up with the US Army Reserves and has since served on active duty in Bosnia-Herzegovina and Iraq. In public office, Rice first served as a Councilman, then Mayor of Glendale, Colorado, and finally as a State Representative since 2006. Read More »

Already very serious and deadly, today's incident could escalate into a broader conflict, a possibility that all concerned parties should do all they can to avert. Lebanese officials were quoted as favoring a diplomatic resolution to the crisis, and there are no reports of major Israeli troop movements, so this may be a hopeful sign that all parties have sought to observe UNIFIL's call for "maximum restraint." A few weeks ago, Israel's attack on a Turkish flotilla heading to Gaza marked a turning point in international opinion about the Gaza Blockade. Since then, the Obama Administration has called on Israel to take steps to ease the blockade. We believe that Israel's policy is impossible to defend, and instead of just easing the blockade, it should be ended. Read More »

Yesterday, Michigan, Kansas and Missouri held their primary elections. We, unfortunately, couldn't coerce any Arab Americans to run for public office in this year's elections in Kansas or Missouri, but we do have victories to declare in Michigan. Of the 9 Arab American candidates in races across the state, 4 won their primaries and will be moving on to the general election on November 2, 2010. To those who lost, better luck next time! To those moving on, congratulations and we hope for the best in November. Read More »

Those behind SB 1070 are not going to wait around for the federal government to get their act together. Arizona State Representative Russell Pearce, a sponsor of SB 1070, has recently expressed interest in introducing legislation this fall that would deny birth certificates to children born in Arizona to parents who are not legally in the U.S. That's right; he is attempting to deny them the American citizenship accorded to them by the 14th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. The answer is no. But you wouldn't know it if you were watching Dan Senor on Hardball with Chris Mathews last night. Appearing to discuss the grave injustice he feels would be committed by allowing the American Muslim community to build a community center near ground zero, Dan Senor was introduced as a senior fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations. True and fair enough.
However... Read More »

Israel’s blockade of Gaza is counterproductive, immoral and illegal. Our government’s position on this flawed and tragic policy must change. We ask policymakers to consider the facts and work with our allies to end this policy. Doing so is in the best interest of the Palestinians, the Israelis, and our own national security interests. Nearly 1.5 million Palestinians are trapped in Gaza, with 4 out of 5 depending on humanitarian aid agencies for basic necessities. UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon described the suffering inflicted on the people of Gaza by the blockade as “unacceptable.” The blockade’s purpose was not merely to keep weapons out of Gaza, but was deliberately designed to target the civilian population of Gaza, with bans on things like potato chips, soda pops, pasta, and other things that clearly posed no security threat. The health situation in Gaza, already worrisome during the early period of the blockade, was severely exacerbated in the aftermath of Israel’s assault on Gaza in 2008/09 (known as Operation Cast Lead), in which much of Gaza’s infrastructure destroyed with the possibility of repair due to the blockade. Under the blockade policy, Palestinians are forbidden to leave Gaza except in special cases. Those who can’t leave Gaza include many patients who need to leave for necessary treatment. Movement inside Gaza is also restricted by a unilaterally imposed “buffer zone” along the inside of the walls and fences surrounding Gaza. The buffer zone as enforced goes much deeper into Gaza than publicly acknowledged, taking up “between a quarter and a third of Gaza’s agricultural land.” Read More »

There are bad polls, and then there are bad interpretations of polls. Putting them together (i.e. a bad interpretation of a bad poll) can create a mess of misinformation, which is exactly what the New York Times gave us this morning. Read More »

Much has been made of the controversy surrounding the building of an Islamic cultural center (which would include a mosque) in lower Manhattan. Since only those who equate Islam with the actions of the 9/11 terrorists can logically deem it offensive for an Islamic center to exist near ground zero, opposition to the center was confined to the typical bigoted fringe circles… until leading Republican presidential contenders afforded them legitimacy by joining the anti-Muslim chorus. The journey of the Department of Justice’s FBI Domestic Investigations and Operations Guidelines (DIOGs) has been a long and bumpy one. From the introduction of the DIOGs by Attorney General Ashcroft in 2002, to the authority being changed three times by the Bush administration to expand the FBI surveillance authorities with reduced oversight, our community has routinely been targeted and negatively affected along the way.
