Lessons from the AIPAC Conference

AIPAC's hawkish resolutions undermine American claims that it would prefer to solve the dispute diplomatically and add suspicion to an already fractious Iranian-American relationship. Such needless provocations only hurt the US and Israel, since both countries would be much better off seeing the Iranian conflict resolved diplomatically. Read More »

Amb. Michael Oren Claims U.S. Media Bias against Israel

Michael Oren knows something about Hamas that the rest of us don’t: apparently it has one of the most media-savvy public relations teams in the world. That’s what it would take to dupe the American media, which is a claim Oren made in the wake of Israel’s Gaza offensive.  Read More »

Public Opinion on Israel/Palestine: Indifferent or Up for Grabs?

The Israeli-Palestinian conflict has long been one of the most contentious issues in US foreign policy. At dining room tables, friends and family members that otherwise agree on most issues relating to politics are loathe to discuss the topic for fear of igniting a vitriolic exchange. But according to AAI’s most recent poll American Opinions on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, 2012, for an increasing number of Americans, Israel/ Palestine is not even an afterthought.  Read More »

Leading American Jewish Voices Criticize Israel’s Gaza Campaign

Some right-wing Jewish organizations in the U.S. continue to pretend that, in defending all of Israel’s policies (no matter how misguided), they are somehow speaking for the entire American Jewish community. That narrative has been seriously undermined over the past decade, with the emergence of large Jewish groups in the United States and leading figures from within the Jewish community who oppose Israel’s occupation of Palestine and violations of Palestinian rights. And public reaction to this latest Israeli assault on Gaza may very well have conclusively shattered this myth. Read More »

Under Israeli Pressure, US Cancels Gaza Scholarships

By Vieshnavi Rattehalli
An Israeli travel ban on Palestinians from Gaza led the American Consulate in Jerusalem to cancel a two-year-old scholarship program that gave 30 bright and financially disadvantaged students from Gaza and the West Bank the opportunity to study at local Palestinian universities.  Read More »

Media Watch: Key Reads in POLITICO

Over the past few days, POLITICO has been doing an exceptional job covering a number of the key issues we deal with on a daily basis and which affect our community politically and socially. Among others, POLITICO has covered the fallout of the Michele Bachmann’s Muslim Brotherhood conspiracy, Mitt Romney’s latest trip to Israel, and how Islamophobia is factoring into certain congressional races. We encourage you to read the following articles which are extremely informative, and shed light on the some of the arguments being used to characterize these larger issues. Read More »

Displacement Looms Over Bethlehem’s Christians

Two new Israeli settlements, Har Homa and Givat Hamatos, will completely alter the two thousand-year-old geography and biblical landscape which connects two of the holiest cities in Christendom: Jerusalem and Bethlehem. Israeli checkpoints at breaks in the wall surrounding Bethlehem on its northern border already constitute a near-impenetrable barrier for Palestinian travelers, but now, beyond ethnic lines, Christians in Bethlehem are scared that at the current rate of Israeli expansion their holy places may soon be completely off-limits to them.  Read More »

Congress halts aid to the Palestinians despite opposition by Administration

Congress officially announced on Monday that security aid to the Palestinian Authority as well as much needed humanitarian aid has been blocked in response to the Palestinian leadership’s attempt to gain UN recognition. “These are mainly humanitarian and development projects – it is another kind of collective punishment which is going to harm the needs of the public without any positive contribution,” PA spokesman Ghassan Khatib said.  Read More »

Arab American Group Provides Urgently Needed Medical Supplies in Arab World

I wanted to draw your attention to the work of the National Arab American Medical Association (NAAMA). Today NAAMA sent out a press release announcing their efforts to provide "urgently needed" medical supplies throughout the Arab World. The release cites the abysmal state of emergency medical care in Arab countries and highlights the organization's commitment to provide supplies where they are needed. NAAMA's future goal is to "have funds available not only for the ongoing tragedy in Libya but to have contingency plans for emergency medical relief wherever the need may suddenly arise in other parts of the Arab world."  Read More »

Gazans Speak

A few weeks ago, Israel's attack on a Turkish flotilla heading to Gaza marked a turning point in international opinion about the Gaza Blockade. Since then, the Obama Administration has called on Israel to take steps to ease the blockade. We believe that Israel's policy is impossible to defend, and instead of just easing the blockade, it should be ended. Read More »

Why Israel’s Blockade on Gaza Must End

Israel’s blockade of Gaza is counterproductive, immoral and illegal. Our government’s position on this flawed and tragic policy must change. We ask policymakers to consider the facts and work with our allies to end this policy. Doing so is in the best interest of the Palestinians, the Israelis, and our own national security interests. Read More »

An Inhumane Blockade

Nearly 1.5 million Palestinians are trapped in Gaza, with 4 out of 5 depending on humanitarian aid agencies for basic necessities. UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon described the suffering inflicted on the people of Gaza by the blockade as “unacceptable.” The blockade’s purpose was not merely to keep weapons out of Gaza, but was deliberately designed to target the civilian population of Gaza, with bans on things like potato chips, soda pops, pasta, and other things that clearly posed no security threat.  Read More »

The Gaza Blockade: Health in Crisis

The health situation in Gaza, already worrisome during the early period of the blockade, was severely exacerbated in the aftermath of Israel’s assault on Gaza in 2008/09 (known as Operation Cast Lead), in which much of Gaza’s infrastructure destroyed with the possibility of repair due to the blockade. Read More »

People Trapped, Economy Strangled

Under the blockade policy, Palestinians are forbidden to leave Gaza except in special cases. Those who can’t leave Gaza include many patients who need to leave for necessary treatment. Movement inside Gaza is also restricted by a unilaterally imposed “buffer zone” along the inside of the walls and fences surrounding Gaza. The buffer zone as enforced goes much deeper into Gaza than publicly acknowledged, taking up “between a quarter and a third of Gaza’s agricultural land.” Read More »
