This weekend’s violence in Egypt is not only tragic for the victims and their families, but also has the potential of triggering wider sectarian violence, thus posing a threat to the unity of the Egyptian people in this critical time of transition. Read More »

I love Iowa. Folks take politics so seriously. A great group last night at Iowa City's "Old Brick". My talk was called "The Challenges We Face". It was co-sponsored by the United Nations Association and the Arab Students at the University of Iowa. Attached is the front page headline story in The Daily Iowan "Zogby: GOP hopefuls worrisome". A good story that interviewed many in the audience.

Tonight I had the honor to deliver an address to the World Affairs Council of New Hampshire. It was the inauguration of a four part series entitled "Primary Concerns: Critical Foreign Policy Issues at the 2012 Ballot Box" - an effort to prepare the state's voters on the issues the candidates should be raising (but probably won't) when they come through campaigning for the 2012 primary election. Pleased that the Arab World came first! Read More »

Last week, Bahrain’s National Safety Court sentenced 20 doctors, nurses and paramedics to jail terms ranging from 5 to 15 years. They were simply doing their jobs – treating the protesters who had been shot & beaten by state security forces during the protests that rocked the country earlier this year, but the government insists that such actions were fundamentally political in nature and amounted to an attempt to overthrow the government. Tomorrow, Wednesday September 21st, is the International Day of Peace, a holiday established by the United Nations in 1981 to commemorate and strengthen the ideals of peace. It’s a good opportunity for many of us to reflect on the many wars and violent conflicts we are currently involved in, and consider the ways in which we can harness the peaceful, democratic message of the Arab Spring to advocate for an end to political violence. Yesterday, AAI President Jim Zogby joined Geneive Adbo and Ted Piccone in a panel discussion hosted by the National Security Network (NSN) and the Project on Middle East Democracy to address the current state of political affairs in the Arab world and Iran. Pro-democracy movements in several Arab countries are causing regional dynamics with Iran to shift. These changes are raising questions about the role the United Nations and United States will play in shaping regional politics and policy, and the profound implications for the United States in the region. NSN Executive Director Heather Hurlburt moderated the panel. Read More »

The Arab world is different, with dramatic new developments reshaping the political map of the region. Across the Middle East, Arabs have risen up demanding change. No longer satisfied with the status quo, they are holding their governments and ours accountable. As a result, America can no longer afford to ignore the aspirations of the Arab world. Read More »

Despite strong international condemnation from a number of states and interstate organizations, the Syrian government has continued its assault on the Eastern towns of Hama and Deir al-Zour. However, the resistance appears to be growing increasingly organized, and reports of “Coordinating Committees” have popped up across Syria, perhaps signaling a new, more organized phase of the revolution. Just over a year ago, a humanitarian convey of ships (“the flotilla”) headed towards Gaza to break the unlawful blockade and deliver urgently needed humanitarian assistance to the people there. Its journey was disrupted in international waters when Israel attacked it with a commando raid, leaving several Turkish activists killed, including one young American dual-citizen. Despite assiduous efforts on the part of Israel to spin the incident (confiscating all of the activists’ recording equipment and releasing selective footage of activists attacking commandos with bars and sticks), the incident caused a major uproar, and focused attention on the effects of Israel’s unconscionable blockade on Gaza. In a speech this morning at the Council on Foreign Relations, Republican presidential candidate Tim Pawlenty laid out his campaign’s Middle East platform, accusing his Republican opponents of “isolationism” and attacking President Obama’s sluggish response to the Arab Spring. Promising to “speak plainly” about the “the opportunities and dangers we face in the Middle East,” Pawlenty offered a wide-ranging and often contradictory vision, sharply criticizing nearly every aspect of President Obama’s Middle East policy from his insistence on regime “engagement” to his purported policy of “blaming Israel first.” Read More »

Not long ago (many of us still remember it), we had a certain degree of confidence in our ability to lead a private life. But with the technological evolution of the last few decades, most significantly the development of the internet as a primary tool of communication, any real sense of privacy now seems like a fading memory. Between the decreased costs of surveillance technology, our increased reliance on telecommunications, our common use of GPS systems, our frequent and voluntary posting of personal info, locations, and thoughts on social media, and everyone walking around with camera phones ready to capture every noteworthy moment, life is no longer as loose or anonymous as it once was. People like Anthony Weiner paid a pretty heavy price for pretending otherwise. Read More »

A recent New York Times Op-Ed by Council on Foreign Relations senior fellow Ray Takeyh argues that the Middle East is headed for a post-American era. In this era, the United States would ostensible have limited ability to project its power and cajole Arab regimes to pursue policies aligned with American interests. He posits that new Arab countries in democratic transitions in the “era of self-determination” will not be as subjective to American foreign policy priorities as previous alliances of patronage have been. I received an email the other day from a community member who is no stranger to Washington politics. Her email reinforced frustration over an issue that has been a topic of discussion here in Washington for the past three months or so: the importance of an Arab American meeting with the President to discuss the Middle East. Now more than ever, Arab Americans are in a unique position to bridge the gap between the often flawed American policy toward Arab countries and U.S. interest in the region. Read More »
