In California, Johnny Khamis narrowly won a seat on the San Jose City Council over Robert Braunstein. The Michigan State University Board of Trustees election was another close race, but on Wednesday afternoon the final results showed Arab American Brian Mosallam in second place, claiming a seat on the board. On November 11th, Arab American Family Services (AAFS) will host a dinner entitled “Breaking Bread, Building Bridges” in association with AmeriCorps Vista. The dinner will highlight the history that the Arab American community and the U.S. Army have shared, and will announce the launch of a project in collaboration with AmeriCorps Vista that will bring together US veterans who served in the Middle East and at-risk immigrant and refugee youth in a tutoring program that is aimed at connecting both groups in a supportive academic setting. The program will aid immigrant and refugee children, particularly those from the Middle East, to view the US military more positively. Read More »

Today marks the 27th anniversary of the death of Alex Odeh, who was killed by a pipe bomb as he entered his office in Santa Ana, California. Odeh was the West Coast Regional Director of the Arab-American Anti-Discrimination Committee (ADC) as well as a lecturer and poet who immigrated to the U.S. from Palestine in 1972. He was supposed to speak at the Friday prayer service at a synagogue in Fountain Valley, California the day of his death. Read More »

Unveiled on January 7th of this year, the Danny Thomas commemorative postage stamp posthumously honors the well-known Arab American entertainer whose radio, TV, and film career spanned five decades. The stamp, which has been sold at more than 30,000 US Postal Service locations nationwide since February 16th, was first introduced at an L.A. Gala on the 50th anniversary of the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee and what would have been the late founder’s 100th birthday. Read More »

It’s baffling that Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and other democratic officials doubled down on the DNC’s motion to push through a voice vote on a resolution recognizing Jerusalem as the capital of Israel at the Democratic National Convention. In an interview with the LA Times on Saturday, Mayor Villaraigosa played down the significance of the three-time response to the controversial measure on the floor of the DNC, saying the media blew the whole thing out of proportion and that it was the media, not the delegates, who were concerned about the measure. “Not one person objected.
