You know there is something wrong when a lawmaker, who is commonly praised for his unwavering commitment to uphold Constitutional values, is also labeled the most “contrarian” member of his political party. Representative Justin Amash, a Republican from Michigan, is a Member of Congress that has a tendency to vote out of sync with his party more than most other Republican Members. Amash is not a secret Democrat or a moderate – far from it. Read More »

It’s official. Two Arab Americans will face off for Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords’s old congressional seat. Arizona State Senator Paula Aboud confirmed yesterday that she will run for office in Arizona’s newly redrawn District 2. Two weeks earlier, State Representative Matt Heinz announced that he would pursue the same office. The soon-to-be-formed District 2 will contain much of Giffords’s former district 8, which, due to her recent retirement, is now vacant. Neither Aboud nor Heinz (both Democrats) will run in the special election which is set for June 12. Both Candidates will leave former Giffords aide Ron Barber unchallenged for the Democratic ticket in the special election. It is unclear whether Barber will run for a full term, come November. Currently, Aboud and Heinz are the only two officially declared candidates running for Giffords’s seat in November. Read More »

The GOP has chosen Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels, a public official we’ve praised for his principled stances and success as a public administrator, to deliver the party’s response to the President’s State of The Union address next Tuesday. There are few better suited for the task than Governor Daniels, a governor with an impressive fiscal record the party will use to validate its message on the economy. Read More »

Three key endorsements by Arab American elected officials have bolstered the campaigns of three GOP candidates seeking the Republican nomination for President. Former New Hampshire Governor John H. Sununu, Freshman GOP Congressman Justin Amash (MI -3) and Congressman Richard Hanna (R-NY) have all thrown their weight behind the candidates they believe should win the republican nomination and the presidency. Congratulations to David Ramadan, who won his bid for a seat in Virginia’s House of Delegates on Tuesday. To the credit of the Commonwealth, Tuesday was more than a victory for Ramadan. It was also a defeat for a campaign of misinformation and malicious rumor-mongering; an Islamophobic campaign of the very type that threatens the values, beliefs, and citizens of our country. Today Mississippi Governor, Haley Barbour announced that he will not seek the GOP presidential nomination. Gov. Barbour's announcement came as a surprise to most as in late January he said that he was "seriously thinking" about a presidential run. He shortly thereafter began traveling and also hired new staff. As he said he would, however, Barbour waited until the end of April to make his ultimate decision, and now as a result heads are turning towards Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels. Read More »

Well actually, it’s not a book, but it is a rather important document sometimes ignored; the United States Constitution. Representative Amash, 30, Republican from Michigan, is the youngest Arab American ever elected to Congress and second youngest currently serving in Congress. Read More »

We've been writing about Mitch Daniels quite often, and we've watched him in the news closely these past few months. Governor Daniels (R-Indiana) has been relatively quiet about a potential presidential run, but has remained a subject of extreme interest for many reasons. Gov. Daniels peeks our interest not only because he is Arab American (his grandparents are from Syria), he is a politician who - even in today's hyper-partisan political climate - has not digressed from his primary focus; fixing the economy. With no leading Republican yet officially declared for president and only two exploration committees formed, the 2012 field remains wide open. However, as one surveys the list of potential candidates, one sticks out for a very simple reason. Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels, in contrast to most if not all of his compatriots, has kept his rhetoric on an even keel. He hasn’t pandered to or sought out the political benefits of engaging in the hyper-partisan arena of campaign politics. Read More »

Governor Mitch Daniels (R- Indiana) gave a compelling address to the attendees of the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC)this past Saturday. With much speculation on what President Obama will say in tomorrow’s State of the Union address, we have asked several Arab Americans from across the country to share their thoughts. Below is what they had to say. Please join the conversation and share your reaction to their comments and elaborate with your own take on the speech. It is through this type of engagement that we can develop a healthy discussion on the current state of affairs and contribute to moving our country forward. Read More »
