Earlier today, AAI President Jim Zogby joined a panel of experts at the Wilson Center to discuss the results of a new public opinion survey on the role of the United States in a post-9/11 world. The event was introduced by The Honorable Jane Harman, Director, President and CEO of the Woodrow Wilson Center; and the speakers included Chicago Council on Global Affairs President Marshall Bouton, former CIA Director General Michael Hayden, and New America Foundation Senior Fellow Philip Mudd. Last year, AAI President Jim Zogby's book on the Arab world, Arab Voices: What They Are Saying to Us and Why It Matters, was released to major acclaim and brisk sales. This month, Arab Voices came out in paperback with a new section on the Arab Spring. On Tuesday, Democratic Party Whip Senator Dick Durbin (IL) convened a hearing on the civil rights of American Muslims. Viewed widely as a counterweight to Representative Peter King's (R-NY) hearings on "radicalization" in the American Muslim community, Durbin's hearing did not garner nearly as much attention from the media. Despite the relative lack of coverage, the message Senator Durbin's hearings sent to the American Muslim community and to the general American public at large was an extremely important and positive one.
