On May 2, 2009, Sherine El-Abd, an Arab American activist, will be sworn in as the new President of the New Jersey Federation of Republican Women, becoming the first Arab and Muslim woman to be elected to this post. The New Jersey Federation of Republican Women is a unit of the National Federation of Republican Women, one of the largest women’s political organizations in the country that aims to engage women in the political process. El- Abd has been activist in her community for over 25 years. She served on the Federation’s Executive Committee as Vice President of Middlesex County and as a Commissioner on New Jersey’s Civil Rights Commission. She is currently on the Board of Governors at the Arab American Institute.
