URGENT: Call your senators and urge them to oppose the confirmation of Kenneth Marcus

Posted on May 16, 2018

This morning, the Senate added the confirmation of Kenneth Marcus to the Executive Calendar, meaning a vote can come as early as tomorrow. Marcus has been nominated for the position of Assistant Secretary of the Office of Civil Rights at the Department of Education.

His appointment would be a huge setback for civil rights protections in our academic environment. Marcus has been a longtime advocate for the adoption of an overly-broad, political definition of anti-Semitism, which includes criticism of the state of Israel. This is just one of the many ways his appointment would undermine civil rights protections in academia....

Protect the Civil Rights of All Americans; Tell the Senate Committee to Reject Kenneth Marcus’ nomination to the Office of Civil Rights at the Department of Education

Posted on December 08, 2017

This week, the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions held a hearing for nominees to serve in the Departments of Labor & Education, including Kenneth Marcus, nominee to lead the Office of Civil Rights (OCR) at the Department of Education.

As our political environment has seen an increase in racist, anti-Semitic, anti-Muslim, anti-Arab, anti-immigrant, anti-women, and anti-LGBTQ incidents, the OCR needs a director that can address these concerns without bias and with equal application of civil rights protections for all. Kenneth Marcus fails to meet this standard....

Posted on November 21, 2017

The Trump Administration is threatening to shut down the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) General Delegation office in Washington, DC, in the false premise that the Palestinians are making unilateral moves that undermine the possibility of peace. In reality, it’s Israel, through continued occupation and expansion of settlements, that is undermining the possibility of peace. Tell Congress that the attack on the Palestinian diplomatic mission in the US is misguided.

Tell Congress to Rescind the Muslim Ban Immediately #NoMuslimBanEver

Posted on October 16, 2017

We have joined several other organizations in a letter to Congress asking them to rescind the Muslim Ban immediately. Sign on to the petition here.

The Trump administration has once again rolled out a new version of its Muslim ban, although this time it has no end date.

The American people rejected Trump’s bans and rallied at airports across the country in January. Several court decisions have struck down Trump’s un-Constitutional and un-American attempts to turn the President’s campaign promise of “a total and complete shutdown of all Muslims entering the United States” into policy.

#DefendDACA now by supporting the Dream Act

Posted on September 05, 2017

DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Admissions) was the response to a broken political system that failed to pass comprehensive immigration reform. It was a way to provide relief to more than 800,000 young people who are American in every way but their papers. The decision by the Trump Administration to terminate DACA demonstrates that instead of leading and doing what is best for our country and these young Dreamers, the administration is treating them as political bargaining chips. We need you to take a few minutes now to demand that Congress act to pass the Dream Act S.1615/H.R.3440.

Posted on April 11, 2017

We're asking for your help to address our community’s concerns including access to health and social services and expanding civil rights protection. Support the creation of the MENA (Middle East/North Africa) checkbox as an ethnicity category on the U.S. Census and other federal forms today.

In 2011, the MENA Advocacy Network was established to represent the interest of all communities from the MENA region in the U.S. Census. Since then, the Census Bureau has moved forward with testing a MENA category in time for the 2020 Census. Today, the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) is making its final decisions...
