What We Do

AAI’s 2009 Mid-Year Report

On behalf of the Arab American Institute, we wanted to share some highlights of our work in the last six months. We’ve created a solid foundation and, as you’ve heard online and by mail, we’re building on that foundation with a solid plan of action: The Arab American Action Agenda 2009/2010.

The Action Agenda provides research, resources, and recommendations for concrete measures that you can take to promote substantive action on issues that matter most to Arab Americans.

We hope you’ll be as proud as we are of what you and AAI have accomplished so far in 2009. And we hope you’ll continue to support our work throughout the year.

What We Do

As the only national organization that promotes Arab American participation in the U.S. electoral system, AAI has developed a host of services, from voter education to liaison with the national parties, to support the community’s activities. We are also the leading policy and research organization on domestic and policy concerns of Arab Americans. Through ongoing meetings with members of the Administration and Congress, a variety of publications and issue briefs, media and direct member mobilization, AAI maintains a strong presence among policy makers who impact our issues.

Through its many programs, AAI:

    • Provides leadership in U.S. – Middle East relations by convening national and local organizations for national leadership summits to respond to crisis situations, and holding meetings with policy makers and U.S. government officials.

    • Promotes Arab American participation in the U.S. electoral system by helping form Arab American Democratic and Republican leadership councils and hosting major events at national and state party conventions; conducting get-out-the-vote (GOTV) events and candidate forums; registering and informing Arab American voters in key states; and publishing an annual congressional scorecard.

    • Conducts polling and research, including the first-ever nationwide poll of Arab American voters, and several polls in the Arab World.

    • Conducts media outreach and provide public information through the use of a weekly e-newsletter AAI Bulletin; Countdown, a weekly update that covers Congress, the White House and other political developments; and AAInsider, a seasonal magazine for AAI members. AAI’s President Dr. James Zogby writes Washington Watch, a weekly column for the Arab World and the Arab American press. Dr. Zogby also hosts Viewpoint, a weekly policy program that airs on every Friday on Abu Dhabi TV and LinkTV (on some cable providers). AAI also publishes reports frequently on a variety of issues including the demographics of Arab Americans and violence against Arab American merchants, among others.

    • Leads outreach to the Arab World by organizing numerous trips to the Middle East for members of Congress and other U.S. delegations.
